We present a list of species of ferns and lycophytes from Carambeí, a municipality located in Paraná state, southern Brazil. This area, locally known as “Campos Gerais”, presents an intricate mosaic of forests and savannah with several canyons and humid valleys that harbors a rich and unique vegetation in Southern Brazil. In total, we found 129 species (119 ferns and 10 lycophytes), distributed in 18 families and 59 genera, and 20% (26 spp.) of which are endemic to Brazil. The most expressive families were Polypodiaceae (19 spp.), Pteridaceae (18 spp.) and Thelypteridaceae (15 spp.). The most representative genera were Asplenium (8 spp. - 6.2%) and Amauropelta (8 spp - 6.2%). Terrestrial herbs, epiphytes and lithophytes are the most common guild of life forms, successively. The richest environments were woody forest (61% of the species) and herbaceous-shrubby (12%). Arachniodes denticulata, Phlegmariurus flexibilis and P. Heterocarpon are the second record in the “Campos Gerais” region. We also provide photographic plates with diagnostic characters for most of the species.

ResumoO trabalho apresenta espécies de samambaias e licófitas de um fragmento de Mata Atlântica, inserido na região de semi-árido, localizado na Serra da Jibóia, Município de Santa Teresinha, Bahia, Brasil e a análise das relações florísticas com outras formações vegetais do país, contribuindo para ampliar as informações sobre a flora vascular do estado, bem como do bioma Mata Atlântica. São apresentadas 97 espécies, em 51 gêneros e 22 famílias. As famílias mais representativas foram Dryopteridaceae (17 spp.), Polypodiaceae (16 spp.), Pteridaceae (12 spp.) e Hymenophyllaceae (10 spp.). A maioria das espécies ocorre como epífita (48%), 38% terrestre, 3% rupícola, 3% como hemiepífita e 8% com mais de um tipo de hábito. A análise de similaridade mostra que a flora de samambaias e licófitas da região está relacionada com o Sul da Bahia e Sudeste do Brasil, sugerindo que a área de estudo apresenta condições ambientais semelhantes às áreas relacionadas e reforçando as singularidades florísticas da região. AbstractThe work presents species of ferns and lycophytes from a remnant of Atlantic Forest located in a semi-arid region, in the Serra da Jibóia, municipality of Santa Teresinha, State of Bahia, Brazil. We also analyzed the floristic similarities of this area with other regions in Brazil. In total, 97 species were presented, representing 51 genera and 22 families. The most representative families were Dryopteridaceae (17 spp.), Polypodiaceae (16 spp.), Pteridaceae (12 spp.), and Hymenophyllaceae (10 spp.). Most species occur as epiphytes (48%), whereas 38% are terrestrial, 3% are lythophyte, 3% are hemiepiphyte and 8% present more than one type of habit. The similarity analysis showed that the flora of ferns and lycophytes from Serra da Jibóia is related to the Southern Bahia State and Southeastern Brazil areas, suggesting similar environmental conditions among those areas.

The avifauna of the Araucaria forests in the higher reaches of the Serra da Mantiqueira massif is little known and poorly documented. This region is recognized as an important area of differentiation of birds in southeastern Brazil. Here, we present the first ornithological survey of the Araucaria forests and associated habitats in the mountains of extreme southern Minas Gerais state, near the southern tip of the Serra da Mantiqueira. The study area comprises the Serra do Juncal region and several adjacent sites, located in the municipalities of Gonçalves and Camanducaia. We recorded 206 bird species, of which 57 (27.7%) are endemic to the Atlantic forest. Several records represent the first specimens for Minas Gerais, in the hinterlands of Serra da Mantiqueira, proving that many Atlantic species also occur in the intern most slope of this mountain range. Examples are: Dysithamnus xanthopterus, Chamaeza ruficauda, Leptasthenura setaria, Heliobletus contaminatus, Hemitriccus obsoletus, Phylloscartes difficilis, Piprites pileata, Poospiza thoracica, and Cacicus chrysopterus. The region is also a previously unknown area of sympatry of other closely related species: Scytalopus notorius and S. speluncae, Lepidocolaptes squamatus and L. falcinellus, and Basileuterus culicivorus and B. hypoleucus. Both species of Lepidocolaptes and Basileuterus hybridize in the region. We also comment on the avifauna conservation, which have been threatened by eco-tourism, building of new styles of houses, domestic animals, forest fragmentation, and plantations.
