Framework for urban freight transport analysis in medium-sized cities

Abstract: The urbanization process, especially the diverse aspects regarding size, function, position and growth of cities, significantly affect the Urban Freight Transport (UFT). This paper deals with behaviour of UFT in medium-sized cities. Here we will identify the attributes that characterize the Medium-sized Cities (MC), as well as the influence factors in UFT. “…In Brazil, we add theft of goods as a UFT barrier. Flora et al [60] report theft of goods as a social influence on UFT, and Guerin et al [61] argue that such thefts influence the UFT's reliability, increasing logistics costs. Addressing these barriers contributes to creating an urban environment that is conducive to UFT, but the question of who should deal with such barriers remains unanswered, which future research should examine.…”

“…Over the last few years, logistics efficiency improvements have been made to boost competitiveness among companies of different sizes through efficient approaches to urban freight distribution. As consumption patterns in urban areas changes, it is necessary to adapt urban logistics to meet the demand derived from this consumption, directly impacting the urban environment, through competition with public and private transportation (Flora et al, 2019). Researchers suggest that smaller and specialized retailers may be responsible for a considerable volume of small-sized vehicle movement (Cherrett et al, 2012).…”
