Hidden features in global knowledge production: (re)positioning theory and practice in academic writing

Abstract: A key challenge for applied linguistics is how to deal with the historical power imbalance in knowledge production between the global north and south. A central objective of critical applied linguistics has been to provide new epistemological foundations that address this problem, through the lenses of post-colonial theory, for example. This article shows how the structure of academic writing, even within critical traditions, can reinforce unequal transnational relations of knowledge. Analysis of Brazilian the… Show more

“…A related framing effect may also result from OS infrastructure shaping its content. It has been argued that infrastructures need to be put in place in order to produce OS, which will shape what knowledge is considered legible, legitimate, worthy of visibility, and eligible for quality control [11,28]. While all infrastructures (OS or not) may influence their content, OS may have discrete framing effects that need special attention.…”

“…While there is a danger of romanticising and naturalising everyday concepts when picked up as theoretical lenses, I have found value in using the concept of gambiarra to locally rethink ‘The pedagogy of multiliteracies’. Initially published in the Brazilian Journal of Applied Linguistics (Windle, 2017a), my use of this term was entextualised as potentially a travelling theory in the introduction to the edition in which it appeared, written by a well-known northern scholar, through comparison to similar concepts and theoretical resources in the global north:The Brazilian tradition of gambiarra (like the French système D) is to creatively improvise solutions through tactics that, like guerrilla warfare, thrive on unpredictability. Gambiarra enables social actors to seize the moment and invent ways of acting in the interstices of power.…”
