Multimodal Study of Adult-Infant Interaction: A Review of Its Origins and Its Current Status

Abstract: An interpretative review of research on adult-infant interactions involving the analysis of movement behaviors is presented, systematically linking previous studies to current research on the subject. Forty-two articles analyzing the dyad's interactive movement in the period 1970-2015 were found. Twelve papers were excluded, including only those that studied the phenomenon in the baby's first year of life. The results revealed that movement was a central topic in early interaction studies in the 70s. In the 19… Show more

“…Research on parent-infant interactions has mainly focused on communication through vocalizations, facial expressions, and gaze behaviors (Pérez and Español, 2016 ). Thus, apart from pioneering studies describing patterns of coordination between infant and maternal movements (Stern, 1971 ; Beebe et al, 1977 , 2010 ; Beebe, 1982 ), little is known on the role of movement communication in early parent-infant interaction.…”

“…Within the history of research into adult-infant interactions, the role of bodily movement has played a distant second fiddle to a predominant focus on vocalisations, facial gestures, and eye contact (Adolph et al, 2010;Pérez & Español, 2016). However, the work of researchers such as Beebe, Stern, Condon, and Sanders serves to demonstrate the importance of movement as a mode of communication within adult-infant interactions.…”

“…Mother–infant interactions are coordinated in a multimodal way, coexisting multiple sensory modes (visual, vocal, gestural) that are also coordinated in multiple temporal forms in the interaction. [ 3 ]. However, multimodal interaction has rarely been studied between mothers and infants less than 3 months old.…”
