Abstract: Purpose: to analyze axial tongue strength and related parameters by using the Forling. Methods: data regarding 92 participants, including men and women with a mean age of 23.3 ± 7.7 years, were analyzed. Results: the mean value of the mean tongue strength was 13.0 N, and the maximum strength value was 18.3 N. The mean and maximum tongue strengths showed positive correlation and highly significant association (p < 0.001). The energy accumulated by the tongue was 131.1 N/s. The mean time required for the maximum… Show more

“…Perceptual evaluation is subjective and depends on the examiner's good judgment and experience, whereas instrumental assessment is performed using instruments that provide numerical data on tongue force or pressure, but most tools are not commercially available in Brazil. For this reason, the Biomechanical Engineering Group of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) developed an instrument to measure the axial force of the tongue that has already been used in several studies (1,2,(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17) . The portable version of the Forling instrument was designed later (18) , and is currently undergoing testing.…”

“…Tongue strength is an equally important form of complementary examination, objectively assessed by the maximum pressure exerted on the palate. Several devices have been studied for such a purpose, including national instruments (16) . These devices can be divided into four groups according to the technology used, namely: mouthpieces containing sensors; sensors fixed on the teeth, palate or palatal plates; and fluid-filled bulbs connected to pressure sensors, among other technologies.…”
