Various epidemics in recent years have introduced myriad of challenges to the entire world. COVID-19 disease is the latest crisis with its attendant health and language issues. With its emergence, COVID-19 introduced into the global linguistic repertoire an avalanche of unknown vocabulary to the ordinary language user. In today’s world, language is not only available for communication; it is a tool that contributes to maintaining global peace and order. In bridging diverse communities of humanities in the world, shared meaning becomes a platform for mutual understanding, promoting intellectual development and collaborative research efforts. The current study aims to explore and explicate the novel language of COVID-19, thereby making meaning accessible for clarity of communication. The qualitative method of analysis which relied on secondary data from different online COVID-19 glossaries was utilised. Data collection was a total of 149 terms, out of which 34 were purposively selected for analysis. This was to examine their semantic meaning and also ascertain their word relations. The study investigates the process of developing meaning mechanisms in the use COVID-19 terms among language users. The study found that the COVID-19 has a distinct vocabulary that can be analysed linguistically. The literature review in this study highlighted past researches on COVID-19 as descriptive, others on the frequency count of words and the etymology of terms.

■ ABSTRACT: We report an experiment to check the identification of a set of words in popular written Portuguese with two versions of a computational dictionary of Brazilian Portuguese, DELAF PB 2004 and DELAF PB 2015. This dictionary is freely available for use in linguistic analyses of Brazilian Portuguese and other researches, which justifies critical study. The vocabulary comes from the PorPopular corpus, made of popular newspapers Diário Gaúcho (DG) and Massa! (MA). From DG, we retained a set of texts with 984.465 words (tokens), published in 2008, with the spelling used before the Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement adopted in 2009. From MA, we examined papers of 2012, 2014 e 2015, with 215.776 words (tokens), all with the new spelling. The checking involved: a) generating lists of words (types) occurring in DG and MA; b) comparing them with the entry lists of both versions of DELAF PB; c) assessing the coverage of this vocabulary; d) proposing ways of incorporating the items not covered. The results of the work show that an average of 19% of the types in DG were not found in DELAF PB 2004 or 2015. In MA, this average is 13%. Switching versions of the dictionary affected slightly the performance in recognizing the words. ■

Considerando a mudança de posicionamento no campo publicitário diante das novas demandas sociais, este trabalho busca examinar, na materialidade linguageira e nos aspectos imagéticos, de que forma as escolhas linguísticas e visuais de três peças publicitárias de produtos de beleza veiculadas pelas marcas quem disse berenice?, Avon e Dove nos permitem identificar as ideologias subjacentes às publicidades e sua relação com os interesses mercadológicos das marcas. Consideramos que essas peças publicitárias compõem o movimento FemVertising e, para analisá-las, contamos com as contribuições da Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional, da Gramática do Design Visual e a Multimodalidade, além dos princípios teóricos da Análise Crítica do Discurso. A partir do exame dos textos, observou-se que as marcas modulam os textos multimodais de suas peças publicitárias a fim de convencer o público-alvo de seu posicionamento engajado e comprometido com as atuais demandas sociais relativas à representação da mulher. Este trabalho busca apresentar uma reflexão acerca do posicionamento da publicidade diante do ressurgimento de movimentos contestatórios de cunho feminista, lançando luz sobre o estudo das estratégias persuasivas na publicidade contemporânea, evidenciando seus modos de orientar e reforçar determinados pontos de vista de acordo com seus objetivos mercadológicos
