Cross-sectional associations between cognition and mobility in Parkinson’s disease

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Cross-sectional studies show an association of decline in mental flexibility and inhibitory control with reduced gait speed and falls, as well as divided attention deficit and difficulty in initiating gait. Objective: To investigate the relationships between cognitive function and gait performance in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) who participated in a hospital neurorehabilitation program. Methods: A total of 107 patients (79 males, 28 females; mean age 61.00±8.2 years; mean schooling 11.7±… Show more

“…This study showed a high internal consistency for WHODAS-12 on the global scale (α = 0.87). Similar Cronbach alpha values were obtained for a Spanish population with depression (0.89) 27 , an Italian population after neurosurgery (0.87) 24 and a general Portuguese population over 55 years old (α = 0.86) 15 . A systematic review of 2019, with 14 studies, reported generally high alpha estimates, ranging from 0.81 to 0.96 16 .…”

“…A participation and cognition item was loaded in factors 1 and 2. Cognition has been described with positive correlations for physical performance, such as balance, mobility and walking 26 , 27 . We believe that cognition can have a positive response in mobility and participation.…”

“…In this context, considering that most ADLs require the simultaneous performance of two or more tasks, that is, the performance in dual-task, such as walking and talking to someone, sending messages or remembering a shopping list, this can be one of the physiotherapeutic approaches used during the followup of the patient with PD. (DEBLOCK-BELLAMY; LAMONTAGNE; BLANCHETTE, SOUSA;MACEDO;BRUCKI, 2021).…”
