Entry of dengue virus serotypes and their geographic distribution in Brazilian federative units: a systematic review

Abstract: Objective: To describe the entry of Dengue virus (DENV) serotypes in Brazil and its federative units. Methods: A systematic review of studies published between 1980 and 2018 in databases and in the gray literature was performed using descriptors related to the years of entry of the DENV serotypes. Additionally, experts and official sources of information (Brazilian Ministry of Health) were consulted. Results: From 100 publications selected for the systematic review, 26 addressed the entry of DENV serotypes i… Show more

“…Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by arthropods, whose vector is the female mosquito of the genus Aedes, mainly Aedes aegypt 8 . This infection is caused by an RNA virus of the Flaviviridae family, which has different serotypes: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4 [9][10][11] . Recently, the existence of a fifth serotype (DENV-5) of isolates in Malaysia was postulated during an outbreak in 2007 12,13 .…”

“…Another factor potentially related to the fluctuation of dengue cases is the (re)introduction and/or predominance of different serotypes and/or viral genotypes [ 7 , 8 , 34 ]. The four DENV serotypes circulated in different Brazilian regions during 2011–2013 [ 10 , 35 , 36 ], however, to the best of our knowledge, there is no description of which serotypes circulated in Recife during this period. Despite this, it is important to consider that 2011 was the probable year of introduction of DENV-4 in Pernambuco state [ 10 ], which may have contributed to the cases of 2011 and 2012.…”

Despite this, it is important to consider that 2011 was the probable year of introduction of DENV-4 in Pernambuco state [ 10 ], which may have contributed to the cases of 2011 and 2012. Unfortunately, the lack of surveillance on DENV serotypes (and/or genotypes) makes it difficult to discuss changes in dengue numbers from a herd immunity or ADE perspective.…”

“…In the 1980s, there was an expansion of dengue throughout the Brazilian territory, with the gradual emergence of the four serotypes, which resulted in the emergence of arbovirus epidemics that are still observed in the country [58]. Regarding the epidemiological profile of dengue in Brazil between 2014 and 2019, dengue cases were predominant in the Southeast and Midwest regions, with a predominance of serotype 2 (DENV-2) [59].…”
