Improvement of Titanium Corrosion Resistance by Coating with Poly-Caprolactone and Poly-Caprolactone/Titanium Dioxide: Potential Application in Heart Valves

Abstract: Heart diseases affect part of world population and generally involves the functioning of valves. Valves replacement is the most common treatment and the choice between synthetic or natural/biological implants depends on several factors. Synthetic implants have greater durability, whereas biological ones are more biocompatible. This work proposes the use of polymeric coating on titanium metal surface to increase implant biocompatibility. Poly-caprolactone (PCL) has demonstrated greater efficacy for biomedical a… Show more

“…Coatings 2019, 9, x FOR PEER REVIEW 5 of 13 band characteristic for the Ti-OH appeared at 1029 cm −1 . A band at 1421 cm −1 arising from TiO2 lattice vibration and the bands located in the range from 350-1000 cm −1 were related to the Ti-O stretching vibrations [37,38]. According to the described bands, the Ti-implant surface is covered by a TiO2 layer.…”

“…Ti, Ti+HA+AgNO 3 , Ti+HA+AgNO 3 +PCL, this α-phase has a compact hexagonal structure. In addition, the diffractograms of PCL 26 and Ti+HA+AgNO 3 +PCL indicate the presence of characteristic peaks of PCL. PCL presents an X-ray pattern with two intense reflection peaks at 2θ = 21º and 2θ = 29º, reported by Wei et al and Ferreira et al 26,27 .…”

“…Micrographical analysis made by Ferreira (2018) allowed the observation of the presence of spherulites in the PCL film. In its EDX spectra, the main chemical elements found in the polymer (carbon and oxygen) were identified 26 . Figure 3 shows the diffractograms of C.P.…”
