The aim of this work was to show the evolution over time of the dynamic moduli in components made of Polybutylene Terephthalate reinforced with glass fiber when they are held to temperatures close to the glass transition temperature over time. For this purpose, PBT samples reinforced with short, glass fibers of Ultradur® material with 0%, 20%, and 50% in weight content were tested. Dynamic moduli showed an increment with glass fiber content showing a nonlinear behavior with the temperature. The evolution of storage modulus was depicted by means of a modified law of mixtures with an effectiveness factor depending on temperature and fiber content, whereas the evolution over time was obtained with a time–temperature transformation generated with the TTS Data Analysis software of TA-instruments for a given temperature. Storage modulus showed a linear relationship with glass fiber content when components were held to temperatures near to their respective glass transition temperature, obtained from the maximum of loss modulus curve with temperature. In summary, the value and evolution of dynamic moduli of PBT samples improved with glass fiber content, allowing us to increase the durability of components when they are submitted to high-temperature environments.

For the improvement of the processing of melt-spun lignin-based fibers, the use of a spinning oil is necessary. The use of spinning oils is standard for the processing of PAN based carbon fiber precursors. Since no commercial spinning preparations for lignin fibers are available on the market, a study on different oils, such as technical oils, food-grade oils or spinning avivages, is performed. A stepwise approach with applied tests (viscosity measurement, fiber etching, melt-spinning, stabilization, carbonization) was developed to eliminate oils which are not suitable. The physical properties of the tested oils are determined and spectroscopic studies of these avivages are performed. Mechanical properties are characterized for as-spun lignin fibers, stabilized lignin-based fibers and lignin-based carbon fibers with and without a spinning preparation. Four of seven tested spinning oils improve the handling during the processing of ligninbased fibers but only two spinning oils lead to good quality carbon fibers and improve even the tensile strength of the resulting carbon fibers.

Objective The aim of this study was to develop an objective method to assess the degree of bristle splaying of used manual toothbrushes and to investigate their plaque removal efficacy. Methods A randomized controlled trial targeting Hiroshima University students was performed to assess the plaque removal efficacy of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) manual toothbrushes. Participants were randomly assigned to the soft toothbrush group (n = 40) or the medium toothbrush group (n = 40). A small number of participants discontinued the intervention for personal reasons in both the medium (n = 6) and soft (n = 2) toothbrush groups. Toothbrushes were collected immediately after first use (T0: baseline), after 1 month of use (T1: month 1), after 2 months of use (T2: month 3) and after 3 months of use (T3: month 6), following the allocation of a new toothbrush. The bristle surface area was measured using digital software. Results The surface area of the bristles was significantly greater at T1, T2 and T3 than at T0 in the medium toothbrush group (n = 34) and soft toothbrush group (n = 38) (P < .001). Importantly, plaque removal efficacy, calculated from a modified plaque control record score and modified patient hygiene performance score, was significantly lower at T2 than at T0 in both groups. Conclusions Our method for evaluation of bristle splaying is considered to be reliable and reproducible. PBT toothbrushes may become less effective after two months of use.
