Factors associated with injuries in adolescents, from the National Adolescent School-based Health Survey (PeNSE 2012)

Abstract: The analysis of the determinants for suffering injuries in childhood and adolescence shows the complex relationship between associated factors, which points to the need for action towards several aspects to reduce social inequalities, strengthen family ties and prevent violent contexts and individual risk factors.

“…It was also observed that adolescents originating from poorer urban areas start sexual activity at an earlier age (10). Sexually transmitted infections are serious public health problem worldwide, particularly af-fecting young people, this is confirmed by the data -70% of patients with sexually transmitted infections are aged between 15 and 24 years (3). Reducing risky sexual behavior and sexual education that provides correct information about reproductive health protection can reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infections as well as to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies among adolescents (12).…”

“…In our study, 35.2% students reported that they were involved in a fight in or around school and 15.2% of them reported that they were involved in a fight where they could get injured. Studies have demonstrated that 24.5%–50.2% students are involved a fight in or around the school [ 9 – 11 , 20 , 21 ], and studies conducted in the United States and Brazil have found this frequency to be between 6.5% and 33.0% [ 1 , 13 , 15 , 16 , 22 ]. The results of our study and those of other studies conducted in our country are much higher than those of international studies.…”

“…The desensitization of students about violence in the school or their different perceptions about the concept of feeling secure may reveal this consequence. Previous studies have revealed a relationship between feeling insecure and violence [ 22 , 24 ]. It has been reported that students assuming school as insecure because of violence in the school cause their absence unless it is compulsory [ 39 ].…”

“…At the same time, there are gender differences in the incidence as well type of injuries among adolescents [ 14 17 ]. While male adolescents have higher overall rates of injuries of all types than their female peers [ 1 , 18 , 19 ], female adolescents show a higher incidence in self-inflicted injuries [ 11 , 20 23 ]. Moreover, male adolescents are prone to violent injuries because of prevalent risk behaviors such as competitive sports and alcohol consumption [ 16 , 24 ].…”
