Climate trends in the municipality of Pelotas, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: Changes in the frequency of occurrence of extreme weather events have been pointed out as a likely impact of global warming. In this context, this study aimed to detect climate change in series of extreme minimum and maximum air temperature of Pelotas, State of Rio Grande do Sul, (1896Sul, ( -2011 and its influence on the probability of occurrence of these variables. We used the general extreme value distribution (GEV) in its stationary and non-stationary forms. In the latter case, GEV parameters are variable… Show more

“…These types of distributions have been widely applied in previous studies (e.g., Silva et al, 2002;Sansigolo, 2008;Back et al, 2011;Souza et al, 2012;Mello & Viola, 2013;Fechine Sobrinho et al, 2014), while the maximum likelihood method has been already used in Ramos & Moala (2014) and Kruel et al (2015).…”

“…Usually, the diffuse pollution that is associated with rain is more important the longer the period of drought that precedes the referred phenomenon, that is, extended drought periods. The accumulation of materials and pollutants in urban regions increases during longer periods of lack of precipitation, as pollutant elimination is controlled by physical processes such as rain associated with the interval of occurrence, intensity, and duration (Kruel et al, 2015). The need generated by analyses of runoff frequency related to diffuse pollution has led to the concept of light rain hydrology, also called small storms (Pitt, 1999).…”
