Abstract: Few cases of human cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania naiffi were described in the medical literature. The aim of this study was to report and analyze new cases of L. naiffi in the period between the years 1992 to 2011. The strains were characterized by isoenzyme analysis. All patients assisted had small lesions; ranging from 1.0x1.0 mm and 13.5x11.5 mm. The lesions observed were widely distributed: 55.5% on the lower limb, 5.5% in the abdominal area, 16.6% on upper limb and 22.2% in upper limb … Show more

“…Leishmania braziliensis is widely distributed in Brazil. 1 L. naiffi infection in humans is limited to the states of Amazonas, Acre, Pará, Rondônia and Mato Grosso, 16 with no complications having been reported until our study revealed the first case of CL caused by L. naiffi in Amapá. L. infantum is phylogenetically close to Leishmania donovani, the agent that causes VL and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis in the Old World (Europe); 17 occurrence of cutaneous lesions caused by L. infantum in immunocompetent individuals is uncommon in the Americas, especially in Brazil.…”

“…This patient had specific clinical features with a chronic leishmaniasis presentation. The other patients had benign clinical course with spontaneous healing or good response to pentamidine, as reported in several series [12][13][14][15]. Recent reports suggested that L. (V.) naiffi could be resistant to firs-line treatment, with a poor response to meglumine antimoniate or pentamidine [16,17].…”

“…naiffi was described for the first time in Brazil, in Para state, in 1989 [ 9 , 10 ] and has been isolated from skin and viscera of nine-banded armadillo ( Dasypus novemcinctus) [ 9 , 11 ]. Since then, only few cases or small series have been reported [ 12 15 ]. These reports described a benign clinical course with spontaneous healing or a good outcome with pentamidine.…”

“…The natural host of L. naiffi is Dasypus novemcinctus [ 40 ]. In humans, infection with L. naiffi generally manifests as localized lesions that are amenable to spontaneous cure or rapid treatment [ 39 , 41 43 ]. Leishmania naiffi has been identified in only one human case of leishmaniasis in Rondônia, a 35 year-old man from the municipality of Rolim de Moura [ 43 ].…”
