This article analyzes the flows of water and total suspended sediment in different reaches in the lower course of the Negro River, the largest fluvial blackwater system in the world. The area under study is the Anavilhanas Archipelago, which is a complex multichannel reach on the Negro River. Between the years 2016 and 2019, data about water discharge, velocity, and concentration of total suspended solids (TSS) were acquired in sample sections of the Negro River channels located upstream, inside, and downstream of the Anavilhanas Archipelago. In the study area, the Negro River drains an area greater than 700,000 km2, and the mean water discharge observed before the Anavilhanas was about 28.655 m3·s−1, of which 97% flows through two channels of the Archipelago close to the right and left banks. The mean TSS concentration of the Negro River upstream and downstream the Archipelago was 3.28 mg·L−1 and 1.63 mg·L−1, respectively. Within the Archipelago, we observed more TSS in the channel on the left bank of the Negro River (mean of 4.50 mg·L−1). The total suspended sediment discharge of the Negro River before (3.14 Mt·year−1) and after (1.43 Mt·year−1) the Anavilhanas Archipelago indicates a 55% retention of the suspended load due to the low water slope and reduced flow velocity caused by the backwater effect of Solimões River on the Negro River. The hydro-sedimentary scenario of the low course of the Negro River characterized in this study indicates a slow and continuous sedimentation process in the Anavilhanas Archipelago. The results presented will serve as a baseline to assess the impacts of the dams on the Branco River, the main tributary for both water and sediment in the Negro River basin.

Soils in floodplain ecosystems are sedimentary and subject to removal, transport, and deposition processes caused mainly by the water cycle, contributing to frequent variations in landscape patterns and continuous transformation of the floodplain environment. Given the constant disturbance caused by flood pulse variability, it is difficult to assess soil properties in floodplain ecosystems. Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0 to 0.10 m at floodplain and upland forest sites between Santarém and Gurupá, Pará State, Brazil. Samples were analyzed for pH H 2 O, aluminium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, total organic carbon, boron, zinc, copper, iron, manganese, sand, silt, and clay. Potential and effective cation-exchange capacity, sum of bases, base saturation, aluminum saturation, and organic matter were calculated. Data were subjected to descriptive analysis, analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and hierarchical clustering. Chemical and textural parameters differed significantly between floodplain and upland forest soils. Soil properties were highly heterogeneous. Aluminium and aluminium saturation had the highest coefficients of variation among floodplain samples, whereas pH H 2 O and base saturation had the lowest. It is possible to infer from the results that floodplain forest soils maintain high levels of fertility. However, this environment also shows high acidity and toxic levels of exchangeable aluminium.

INTRODUCCIONLa amazonía peruana, conocida también con el nombre de selva, montaña, región oriental, región amazónica o hílea amazónica, abarca una extensión de 759,052Km 2 que, representa aproximadamente el 59% del territorio nacional y cerca del 14% de l a amazonia continental. S u población, estimada a 1990, es aproximadamente de 2'450,000 habitantes.Desde el punto de v ista climático, la amazonia peruana, en términos generales, se caracteriza por presentar elevadas temperaturas y fuertes precipitaciones, la temperatura media anual varía de 22.5 a 27.2 ºC y la precipitación media anual de 602 a 3,411 mm.En. la amazonía peruana se ha identificado tres grandes ecosistemas: el bosque pluvial, que se caracteriza por una estación seca, de no más de 3 meses consecutivos y presentar una vegetación natural típica de bosque húmedo tropical; el bosque estacional semisiempreverde, constituido por una pronunciada época seca, no mayor de 4 meses consecutivos; presenta una vegetación natural típica de bosque seco tropical; y el bosque espinoso, que se caracteriza por su baja precipitación y por ser una región árida (Sánchez y Benites, 1983).En esta región, se distinguen principalmente dos zonas diferenciadas por su altitud, morfología, clima, características de sus ríos, etc., que son la selva alta y selva baja.
