IntroductionThe review titled Passion fruit by-products as a source of bioactive compounds for non-communicable disease prevention: extraction methods and mechanisms provide valuable insights into the health benefits and industrial applications of passion fruit waste. Passion fruits are a tropical and subtropical vine species, which produces edible fruits. Many food product types can be made from passion fruits. However, during passion fruit processing, large amounts of waste are released in to the environment. This review focuses on extraction methods of bioactive compounds from passion fruit by-products such as leaves, peels, seeds, and bagasse.MethodsThis comprehensive review focuses on the bioactive compounds present in passion fruit by-products, emphasis on their mechanisms of action on non-communicable diseases. It also provides a detailed analysis of the extraction methods used to obtain these bioactive compounds, their potential industrial applications, and the factors that affect extraction efficiency.ResultsThis review encourages further research and innovation in utilization of passion fruit waste as a source of bioactive compounds for non- communicable disease prevention and their mechanisms of action. This can advance the circular economy. It also highlights the importance of sustainable and green extraction methods, which have gained attention due to environmental concerns.DiscussionUnlike previous reviews, this comprehensive article explores the potential health benefits of multiple passion fruit waste products. It also examines the possible applications of these extracts for industrial goods such as food additives, colorants, nutraceuticals, natural antioxidants, and antimicrobial agents. Overall, it contributes new information emphasizing the potential of passion fruit by-products as a source of bioactive, and the findings have implications for the scientific community and industry, promoting a deeper understanding of the health benefits and sustainable practices associated with passion fruit waste utilization.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the infestation of the flower-bud-fly in different sizes of flower buds and to relate the infestation with the plant phenology and weather variables. In the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons, flower buds of plants were collected to obtain pupae, adults, and parasitoids in a commercial orchard of sour passion fruit, in Sombrio, state of Santa Catarina. The level of infestation, pupal viability, and percentage of parasitism were calculated. Every fortnight, the vegetative and reproductive structures of 12 orchard plants (0.25 m² per plant), randomly distributed, were monitored, as soon as they reached the height of the trellis. Three population peaks of the floral bud fly were observed in the seasons, which preferred to oviposit in buds larger than 2 cm. The critical period for pest monitoring and control occurred between November and December. The average temperature and precipitation were the main factors that influenced the production of sour passion fruit. The average temperature was correlated with the emission of flower buds and the emergence of lonqueids. D. inedulis was the predominant species in flower buds, in which Dasiopssp.1, Dasiops sp. 2, and Neosilba certa were reported for the first time. It was also the first report of Utetes anastrephae and Aganaspis pelleranoias parasitoids of larvae-pupae of the flower bud fly of the sour passion fruit tree in Santa Catarina.

En Perú, Passiflora ligularis (Juss, 1805) (granadilla) es una de las pasifloráceas con mayor demanda en el mercado. Los dípteros del género Dasiops (Lonchaeidae) son perjudiciales para el cultivo de pasifloráceas debido a que las larvas se alimentan de las estructuras internas de los botones florales, flores y frutos, ocasionando entre el 50 y 60% de pérdidas en la producción de dichos cultivos. Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar la incidencia de Dasiops sp. en botones florales de un cultivo de granadilla y los factores climatológicos (temperatura, precipitación y humedad relativa) del Fundo San Pedro de Grapanazú (Huancabamba - Oxapampa, Pasco, Perú), durante la época seca, entre los meses de septiembre y octubre del 2020. El protocolo experimental y exploratorio, consistió en tres recolectas quincenales de 50 botones florales, los cuales se disectaron para determinar la incidencia de Dasiops sp.; además se recolectaron 120 botones florales que contenían el estadio larval, a partir del cual se obtuvieron adultos para la identificación del género. En paralelo se realizaron monitoreos diarios de factores climatológicos, con los que se calcularon promedios quincenales para determinar la correlación de Pearson, entre dichos promedios y la incidencia de Dasiops sp. Los resultados presentaron una incidencia de 15,3 % y una correlación significativa entre la incidencia de Dasiops sp. en botones florales y la humedad relativa; mientras que las correlaciones incidencia-temperatura e incidencia-precipitación resultaron no significativas. Con lo que se pudo concluir que existe una relación inversa y significativa entre la incidencia de Dasiops sp. y la humedad relativa.
