The use of seeds with good sanitary and physiological potential ensures the establishment of the crop, with a uniform, vigorous and disease-free seedling stand, which will result in good productivity levels. Seen that, the objective was to evaluate the sanitary and physiological quality of purple corn seeds (Zea mays L.) submitted to thermotherapy. They were subjected to heat treatment with immersion in sterile distilled water (SDW) heated at 50, 60 and 70 °C for 1, 2, and 3 minutes. The control (0 min) correspondens only to immersing the seeds in SDW, which were submitted to sanitary and germination tests in a completely randomized experimental design, in a factorial arrangement 3 × 3 + 1 (exposure time × temperature + additional control). Data were subjected to analysis of variance, and the means were compared with the Scott-Knott test up to 5% of probability, with the aid of the statistical program SISVAR®. Immersing Zea mays seeds in hot water at 50, 60 and 70 °C for 1, 2, and 3 minutes is efficient to prevent the increased incidence of Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., and Fusarium sp. The heat treatment at 60 °C for 1 and 2 minutes of immersion reduces the incidence of fungal mycoflora without impairing the physiological quality of seeds.

As atividades alelopática de óleos atuam diretamente em processos de germinação e crescimento de plântulas, afetando o desenvolvimento inicial, uma vez que a constituição e a classe a que pertencem tais óleos estão diretamente relacionados aos efeitos nocivos às sementes. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar o efeito alelopático do óleo de copaíba sobre a germinação de sementes e desenvolvimento inicial de plântulas de tomate. As sementes de dois lotes foram colocadas para germinar em substrato umedecido com 0; 0,01; 0,05; 0,10; 0,15 e 0,20% de óleo de copaíba. Foram utilizadas 200 sementes de tomate por tratamento, distribuídas em quatro repetições. Avaliou-se a germinação, o índice de velocidade de germinação e o comprimento de plântulas. A porcentagem de germinação e o índice de velocidade de germinação das sementes dos dois lotes não diferiram entre si, no entanto sementes do lote 1 responderam de forma positiva à aplicação do óleo de copaíba. Em relação ao comprimento de plântulas, a concentração de 0,01% foi superior às demais. No que se refere ao lote 2, a ausência do óleo de copaíba proporcionou um maior comprimento de plântulas. As concentrações de óleo de copaíba não reduziram a porcentagem de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação de maneira positiva. Para a observação do efeito alélopatico do óleo de copaíba em sementes de tomate, recomenda-se a utilização de concentrações superiores às que foram utilizadas no presente estudo.

Aims: This study evaluates the inhibitory potential of the clove essential oil (Syzygium aromaticum L.) on phytopathogenic fungi in vitro and on maize seeds. Study Design: The experiments comprised completely randomized designs: Seven treatments with five replicates on in vitro test; and four treatments with five replicates each, on in vivo test. Place and Duration of Study: The work was carried out at the Center for Agrifood Science and Technology of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Pombal, Brazil, from April to May 2018. Methodology: In the in vitro test, the essential oil was incorporated into the PDA (Potato-Dextrose-Agar) culture medium. The treatments comprised five concentrations of the oil (0.0125, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2%), a negative control (0.0%), and a positive control (Tiram). Plates were inoculated with the tested fungi, Fusarium verticillioides, Macrophomina phaseolina, and Macrophomina pseudophaseolina, then incubated for seven days at 27±2°C. The percentage of mycelial growth inhibition (PGI) and mycelial growth rate index (MGRI) were estimated. In the in vivo test, maize seeds (AG1051 hybrid) were treated with the essential oil on concentrations equal or superior to the minimum inhibitory concentration found in the in vitro test, besides the negative and positive controls. The artificial inoculation was carried out in fungi colonies for 32 hours and the seed sanity test was performed. The percentage of seeds infected by the fungus was evaluated after seven days. Results: In vitro conditions, clove oil totally inhibited the mycelial growth of F. verticillioides, M. phaseolina and M. pseudophaseolina at concentrations of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.1%, respectively. At 0.2% concentration significantly reduced the incidence of colonies of fungi M. phaseolina and M. pseudophaseolina in hybrid corn seeds AG 1051. Conclusion: The clove essential oil had a fungitoxic effect on the phytopathogens evaluated, under in vitro and in the treatment of maize seeds.
