“…With regard to Brazil, it is worth noting that, although there have been some publications -mainly in print media -on the subject since the 1950s (Lopes, 2019), autism as an object of political mobilization emerged in the 1980s, dating of this period the emergence of the first associations of mothers and fathers of autistic people in defense of the cause (Cavalcante, 2003;Leandro & Lopes, 2018;Lopes, 2019). RESUMO: Este artigo tem como objetivo refletir sobre aspectos históricos relacionados ao autismo no Brasil ao longo das décadas de 1970 a 2008. Analisamos duas autobiografias elaboradas por mães cujos filhos receberam o diagnóstico de autismo entre os anos 1970 e 1980. Os escritos dessas mulheres foram produzidos em momentos distintos (uma em 1988 e outra em 2008) e são aqui compreendidos como fontes pertinentes para se produzir histórias que iluminam questões relativas ao ativismo materno no período em foco a partir da perspectiva feminina. Concluímos que os dois documentos analisados demonstram que a família, no caso do espectro autista, foi um sujeito fundamental no desenvolvimento de uma incipiente rede de proteção aos autistas, em um momento de transição democrática no país. Apesar da distância temporal das narrativas, é possível verificar elementos em comum entre elas, como as motivações para escrever sobre o assunto, o papel das associações de mães e pais de autistas e as dificuldades em encontrar serviços adequados para as necessidades de seus filhos. Também se encontram nelas diferenças, principalmente no olhar acerca do ativismo materno.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects children and their families. We investigated the family environment of children with ASD in Brazil. Twenty-one families participated. Outcome measures administered to parents included the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, Questionnaire on Resources and Stress—Short Form, and the Family Environment Scale. All families reported a number of difficulties, including social interactions and peer relationships, stress levels, and communication difficulties. Families also reported great concern for their child’s future. Brazil is a developing country, yet there are few national resources and studies related to ASD. The challenges continue from diagnosis through treatment. Our results emphasize the need to understand the family environment of children with autism and their parents’ apprehensions to develop effective coping programs.

Autism became a mediator of the bond between adults and children, even appearing where it is not present. The insistence of this signifier in different spaces, the excess of discursive circulation regarding the diagnostic category of Autistic Spectrum Disorder and the psychic development of babies and children, in addition to crystallizing diagnostic shortcuts, testify to new marks that are inscribed in children in these times. More precisely, autism became that in the name of which we intervene with children, at the same time being the name of a risk to be avoided and the amplification of the way we adults dream and build the child in the social imaginary. In both positions, an ideal child is on the horizon. This is the thesis that we sought to defend throughout the study. Our reflections were based on mapping a particular macro-political context that involves autism, broken down throughout the work. In this, the increase in the prevalence of the diagnosis, the mobilization of associations of parents and family members and the autistic people themselves transformed the issue into a public health concern. In Brazil, interventions are organized in a complex field and give rise to political proposals focused on the theme, most of them electing children as a target audience. From a literature review and bibliographic research, we present what we call the field of autism organized in three vectors, contemplating the disputes regarding diagnosis and treatments; the effects of recognizing autism as a disability; the demands of associations of parents and family members and autistic people. The disputes on the stage in each of these three vectors constitute a real battlefield. Interested in the Brazilian political propositions of the last decade specifically directed at autism and in the relationships established between autism and childhood, the thesis aimed to understand how the propositions about autism and its related policies speak of the place manufactured and reserved today for children in the social imaginary, from which each child will have to come as a subject and conquer a unique place. The analysis moved between two discursive plans, based on dialogue with authors in the psychoanalytic field and with sociological and anthropological readings, as well as Brazilian public policies that allowed mapping the current scenario of autism as a public issue. Therefore, from the policies for autism, we developed a reflection on the political dimension of daily life with children and the bond proposed to them.
