Clinical and radiographic evaluation of a new stain-free tricalcium silicate cement in pulpotomies

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the clinical and radiographic success rates of pulpotomies in primary molars using a new stain-free tricalcium silicate cement (Bio-C Pulpo) versus a conventional white MTA (MTA Angelus) as a pulpotomy medicament for primary teeth. Seventy primary teeth in 33 patients were randomly divided into two groups, MTA Angelus (n = 34) and Bio-C Pulpo (n = 36). Clinical and radiographic follow-up examinations were conducted at seven days (except radiographic follow-up),… Show more

“…Thus, significant differences in the inflammatory reaction score between Bio‐C Pulpo and MTA‐HP were not observed at all time points. Besides calcium silicate and calcium hydroxide in the powder, the liquid of Bio‐C Pulpo contains methylparaben and a plasticizing material, containing distilled water, plasticizer and calcium chloride (Lima et al, 2020). There is evidence that methylparaben is noncarcinogenic, and therefore, it is widely used in the pharmaceutical products as an antimicrobial preservative (Soni et al, 2002).…”

“…The addition of plasticizer to the material generally improves its handling and reduces its setting time. In fact, it has been reported that the initial setting time of WMTA is 22 min while that of MTA‐HP is around 17 min (Ferreira et al, 2019) and of Bio‐C Pulpo from 7 min (Koutroulis et al, 2019) to 12 min (Lima et al, 2020). However, it is important to emphasize that the proportion of the powder components and particles size also interfere in the biological response as well as in the chemical and physical properties of the materials (Cosme‐Silva et al, 2019; Ferreira et al, 2019; Silva et al, 2015).…”

“…Healthcare 2022, 10, x ability [37,38]. Although they have been extensively studied and have excellent potential as a pulpotomy material, several cases of discoloration have been reported [39,40]. These materials are available in manual mixing or auto-mixing [41].…”

“…They have several biological and physicochemical properties, such as antibacterial effects, calcium ion releasing, low solubility and good sealing ability [ 37 , 38 ]. Although they have been extensively studied and have excellent potential as a pulpotomy material, several cases of discoloration have been reported [ 39 , 40 ]. These materials are available in manual mixing or auto-mixing [ 41 ].…”

“…Bio-C Pulpo is a bioceramic material containing tricalcium and dicalcium silicate, calcium aluminate, calcium hydroxide, calcium fluoride, silicon dioxide, iron oxide, and zirconium oxide in its powder whereas the liquid contains distilled water, plasticizer, calcium chloride (catalyst), and methylparaben. 9,18,34,35 Thus, the mixture of powder/ liquid provides a material with consistency similar to "modeling putty", 6,18 which facilitates handling and insertion into dental cavities, an advantageous feature of Bio-C Pulpo compared with WMTA. Studies comparing Bio-C Pulpo with WMTA have demonstrated that Bio-C Pulpo, besides alterations in its chemical composition, maintains the biocompatibility and bioactive potential, expected features from a bioceramic material.…”
