Expression of E-cadherin and involucrin in leukoplakia and oral cancer: an immunocytochemical and immunohistochemical study

Abstract: To assess the immunocytochemical and immunohistochemical correlation of adhesion (E-cadherin) and cell differentiation (involucrin) molecules in oral leukoplakia and oral squamous cell carcinoma. Cytological samples and biopsies were obtained from male and female patients aged over 30 years with oral leukoplakia (n = 30) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (n = 22). Cell scrapings and the biopsy were performed at the site of the lesion and histological slides were prepared for the immunocytochemical analysis of e… Show more

“…However, expression of E-Cadherin in corneal cells in Normal oral Mucosa suggests for the functional role of E- cadherin in maintaining epithelial tissue integrity5 and loss of its expression indicates a normal desquamation. These observations in our study are consistent with the finding as that of Yogesh et al (2011),[ 15 ] Yuwanti et al (2011),[ 16 ] Ahmad et al (2013),[ 7 ] Zeidler et al (2014),[ 5 ] Sridevi et al (2015)[ 17 ] Abdalla et al (2017)[ 18 ] Da silva et al (2017)[ 8 ] and Fernandez et al (2017). “…However, such expression pattern was highlighted with respect to basal and parabasilar layer. These findings of the study was in accordance with the observations in studies by Yogesh et al (2011),[ 15 ] Yuwanti et al (2011),[ 16 ] Zeidler et al (2014), Abdalla et al (2017)[ 18 ] Da silva et al (2017)[ 8 ] and Fernandez et al (2017). [ 13 ] This decrease in E-Cadherin expression with increase in the severity of dysplasia may be a result of progression of dysplasia and a late event changing towards a cell phenotype with ability to invade (Yogesh et al ).…”

“…More specifically, the immunohistochemical staining of IVL in cervical carcinoma in situ was remarkably lower than that in invasive cervical tumors [16]. For dysplastic leukoplakia, mild to moderate dysplasia presented relatively higher IVL expression, compared with leukoplakia with severe dysplasia, implying the participation of IVL in oral tissue malignant transformation [17]. PI3K signaling is a widely acknowledged important regulatory pathway in cancer-related processes, such as cell growth, survival and proliferation [18].…”
