Choice of toothpaste for the elderly: an in vitro study

Abstract: Hyposalivation and dental root exposure in the elderly are problems that require special oral care. In this context, the characteristics of certain toothpastes are of particular importance. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity and dentin wear caused by seven different toothpastes. For dentin wear analysis, 40 root dentin specimens were submitted to 20,000 brushing cycles with the different toothpastes and distilled water (control group-CG), using a brushing machine. Dentin surface loss … Show more

“…In the elderly, hyposalivation and tooth root exposure are issues that necessitate particular oral care. The properties of specific toothpastes are thus very important in that context [96]. When compared to regular F toothpaste (1000-1450 ppm F), there is reasonable evidence that high fluoride dentifrices (2500-2800 and 5000 ppm F) considerably boost fluoride level in saliva during the day and in plaque in elderly patients.…”

“…Diş macunları, günlük ağız bakımının temel ürünü olarak kullanılmakta ve çalışmalarda sıklıkla yer almaktadır. 26,[32][33][34][35] Diş yüzeyi temizliğini gerçekleştirmek amacıyla macunların içeriğinde yer alan aşındırıcı partiküller; hem restoratif materyallerin hem de diş sert dokularının aşınmasında etkili olabilir. Yapılan çalışmalar diş macunları ile restoratif materyalleri fırçalama işleminin, materyallerin yüzey pürüzlülük değerleri üzerinde etkili olduğunu bildirmiştir.…”

“…[2][3][4][5] With exposure of cementum due to gingival recession, abrasives in toothpaste become a major causative factor in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL). [4][5][6][7] Knowledge and awareness of the abrasiveness of toothpastes may help in the prevention of cervical abrasions and dentin sensitivity.…”
