Pasture production under different irrigation depths

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThis study aimed to evaluate the production of two pasture species, Brachiaria brizantha cv. BRS Piatã and Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça, under different irrigation depths. The experiment was carried out from May to December 2014, at the State University of Maringá, in the municipality of Cidade Gaúcha-PR, Brazil. The experiment was set out in a strip-plot design, with four replicates, six irrigation depths in the plot and two pasture species in the subplot. Irrigation depths were represented by a… Show more

“…Pasture growth is influenced by seasonal weather patterns, mainly solar radiation and temperature (Vogeler et al, 2016). In tropical countries such as Brazil, the high temperatures favor forage growth and, when properly managed, high yields have been achieved (Pezzopane et al, 2012;Gomes et al, 2015b;Andrade et al, 2016;Antoniel et al, 2016;Martuscello et al, 2016;Sanches et al, 2016).…”

“…A productive drop near to 48% was observed in cycles 2 to 5. Antoniel et al (2016) observed average increases of up to 59.4% in 'Mombasa' guinea grass in the month of November, compared to the cuts observed in July. In the same way, the authors reported a reduction of 40% in the forage yield of 'Tanzania' guinea grass with the decrease in temperature, radiation and evapotranspiration.…”

“…In addition, irrigated pastures reach faster harvest point (by animals or mechanical) due to the higher rate of leaf production (Lopes et al, 2014). The changes in the phytotechnical patterns with the use of irrigation has been emphasized in several studies (Antoniel et al, 2016;Lopes et al, 2014;Ribeiro et al, 2009;Sanches et al, 2015;. Production may increase up to 40% when the crop water demand is supplied by irrigation, together with high soil fertility.…”
