'Tommy Atkins' mango yield and photosynthesis under water deficit in semiarid region of Bahia

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThe aim of this study was to evaluate the 'Tommy Atkins' mango yield and photosynthesis in regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) in semiarid conditions of Bahia, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized block with five treatments and six replications: T1, irrigation supplying 100% crop evapotranspiration (ETc) in phases: I (beginning of flowering to early fruit growth), II (start of expansion until early physiological maturity) and phase III (physiologically mature fruits); T2, RDI with 50%… Show more

“…The yield in the present work tended to be greater when the deficit was applied at maturation and lower when applied to the fruit set stage, even with no difference between the yields considering only RDI, confirming the results from Santos et al (2014b), who applied a RDI of 50% of ETc at the fruit set stage and observed a decreased in yield for two consecutive cycles.…”

“…This result indicates that the RDI applied to the fruit set and maturation stages is an option to use in mango for reduce the applied water depth while maintaining the yield and maintaining or increasing the water use efficiency. Similar results were found by Santos et al (2014b) with the application of RDI with 50% of ETc in 'Tommy Atkins' mango at fruit development and maturation stages, observing no yield reduction, which enabled to maintain the water use efficiency with RDI applied at fruit development stage (Stage II) and increased water use efficiency in the fruit maturation stage.…”

“…The daily irrigation time used for each treatment was used according to COTRIM et al (2011), SANTOS et al (2014a, NEVES et al (2013) and SANTOS & MARTINEZ (2013), considering 0.90 as the application efficiency. These determinations were performed using IRRIMANGA software, computational tool to obtain evapotranspiration and calculation of irrigation time for mango crop management (SANTOS, 2012).…”
