Poultry Litter and Pig slurry Applications in an Integrated Crop-Livestock System

Abstract: Organic fertilizers derived from poultry litter and pig slurry are alternatives to mineral fertilizers in increasing soil nutrient availability. The aim of this study was to evaluate soil response, through characterization of organic C and available N, P, and K contents, and corn yield response to increasing amounts of poultry litter, pig slurry, and mineral fertilizers in an integrated crop-livestock production system (ICL) from 2011 to 2013. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks in a 4 × 3 +… Show more

“…These results were also reported by Hentz et al (2016), who showed an increase in corn yield due to increasing rates of organic fertilizers such as poultry litter and pig slurry, with similar efficiency between their mineral pairs. Novakowiski et al (2013) reported a direct response between poultry litter and pig slurry fertilization and corn yield.…”

“…Effective use of organic fertilizers in an iCL system may result in positive economic and environmental effects because of the greater diversity of the integrated system, which may therefore favor nutrient cycling and availability (Anghinoni et al, 2011;Hentz et al, 2016).…”

“…Letter size is proportional to concentration . This trend in P retention tends to be more pronounced where the density of livestock, particularly pigs, and/or poultry is high (Arbuckle & Downing, 2001;Gomez-Garrido, Martinez-Martinez, Cano, Buyukkilic-Yanardag, & Arocena, 2014;Hentz et al, 2016;Penuelas, Fernández-Martínez, et al, 2019;Wironen et al, 2018), because the manure waste generated is characterized by very low N:P ratios (Humer, Schwarz, & Schedle, 2015;Oster et al, 2018).…”

“…A região apresenta duas estações definidas, uma estação seca de maio a setembro e outra chuvosa de outubro a abril (DALLACORT et al, 2011). De acordo com a classificação de Köppen o clima é Aw (HENTZ et al, 2016), com temperatura de 31.8, 21.1, 24.9 °C, para a máxima, mínima e média, respectivamente.…”
