Epileptic seizures in children with congenital Zika virus syndrome

Abstract: Objectives: to describe preliminary data referred to epileptic seizures and the probability of occurring these epileptic seizures in the infants' first months of life with congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) syndrome. Methods: concurrent cohort study including newborns and infants with congenital Zika virus syndrome attended at the specialized outpatient clinic at IMIP, Recife, Pernambuco, from October 2015 to May 2016. “…According to Goldstein & Slomski , epilepsy is also present in other congenital infections, about 40% in toxoplasmosis and much less frequent in cytomegalovirus and herpes congenital infection. In the present study, the majority of the children presented these symptoms, corroborating with Alves et al, , who performed a cohort study showing that children with CZS had a high incidence of epileptic seizures with early onset, with spasm being the most observed type of crisis.…”

“…These data are also demonstrated in the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which describes the social and economic impact that Zika virus, as well as other diseases, cause to a much greater extent in low-income populations, since they are people who have less access to treated water, sanitation, and education regarding daily health care as well as those in higher housing density per household. All these factors facilitate the proliferation of the vector hence the population becoming more vulnerable (PNUD, 2017 In the present study, the majority of the children presented these symptoms, corroborating with Alves et al, 2016, who performed a cohort study showing that children with CZS had a high incidence of epileptic seizures with early onset, with spasm being the most observed type of crisis.…”

“…Among the case series in which researchers report epilepsy, 5,10,12,51,63 a variety of EEG abnormalities were found, with multifocal discharges being the most prevalent; onset in early infancy was also documented. Only 1 report documented the clinical types of seizures 63 ; 17 of 40 (43%) seizures were described as spasms.…”

“…Of all children, 85.4% had irritability, the most common symptom described, followed by pyramidal and extrapyramidal symptoms (56.3%), epileptic seizures (50.0%), and dysphagia (14.6%) 7 . As for the series by Alves et al 8 , which included 106 children with congenital ZIKV syndrome, 37.7% of the children had epileptic seizures in the observation period, with a median of 192-day crisis occurrence until the first report, from the date of birth. 43.3% of the seizures were characterized as spasms, 22.7% generalized tonic attacks, 20.5% were partial, and 4.5% were other types of seizures.…”
