Nuances between sedentary behavior and physical inactivity: cardiometabolic effects and cardiovascular risk

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to highlight the differences between the cardiometabolic effects and the cardiovascular risk of physical inactivity and sedentary behavior. METHODS:A narrative bibliographic review was conducted. In the research, national and international articles were selected from the PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS databases using the descriptors "sedentary lifestyle, cardiovascular risk, physical inactivity, sedentary behavior, and cardiovascular risks." “…Although the previous research showed that SB was associated with an increased risk of hypertension ( 48 ), we found that the participants with hypertension or osteopenia or osteoporosis spent less daily ST than the participants with normal blood pressure or normal bones mass. The actual causes of hypertension are multifactorial and include genetical, behavioral, and environmental factors ( 49 ).…”

“…This suggests a determining role for the cardiovascular adaptation of the organism to the intensity of the exercise, including training, contrary to a previous narrative review report [ 26 ], despite its methodological flaws [ 30 ]. On the other hand, previous studies reported a negative relationship between cardiovascular health status and a sedentary lifestyle [ 29 , 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 ], which has been emphasized more recently after the COVID-19 lockdown [ 35 ].…”

“…These terms are sometimes conflated [ 29 ], but the consensus (and our working assumption for this study) is that physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour are distinct concepts with different health implications. While both are associated with chronic diseases, they have unique effects on cardiometabolic health [ 30 ]. National guidance typically follow the World Health Organisation’s [ 22 ] description of physical inactivity as simply insufficient levels of PA (less than 60 min of moderate to vigorous intensity activity daily).…”
