Polymorphisms of the GSTT1 and GSTM1 genes in polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract: SUMMARY BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the deletion polymorphisms of the genes of the glutathione S-transferase family GSTT1 and GSTM1 in patients with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), comparing them with a control population. METHODS: Blood was collected from 219 women (110 with PCOS and 109 controls) and genomic DNA was extracted. For the analysis of polymorphisms, the technique used was multiplex PCR. In the statistical analysis, the chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were us… Show more

“…The findings of our investigation agree with those of most prior studies. Babu et al ( 17 ) , Savić-Radojević et al ( 18 ) , Chung et al ( 19 ) , and Azevedo et al ( 20 ) are similar to the results of our study. We could not find an association between the polymorphisms of GSTM1 and GSTT1 and increased risk of PCOS.…”

“…The investigation consisted of five case-control studies, with 872 cases and 735 controls. The primary focus of this study was to explore the relationship between GSTM1 and GSTT1 null deletion polymorphisms and the risk of PCOS ( 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ) . Table 1 shows that two studies were conducted in Asia, two in Europe, and one in South America.…”

“…Like the other members of the glutathione-S-transferases family, GSTM1 act also as a hormone binding protein. The corresponding encoding sequence is well recognized for its high polymorphism [13][14][15]. Due to an extended deletion of the gene (approximately 10 kb), a null activity allele is produced, leading to a non-functional protein [4,12,16].…”
