Thermal Modification of Sugarcane Waste and Bamboo Particles for the Manufacture of Particleboards

Abstract: The thermal modification of particles of the paticleboards constituted of agroforest and industrial waste can improves the dimensional stability (thickness variation) and reduces the use of chemicals that can raise the costs of the process or be hazardous to humans and the environment. This study evaluated the effect of the thermal modification on the physical-mechanical properties and density profile of particleboards manufactured from sugarcane bagasse and bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) (Schult f.) Backer ex H… Show more

“…The heat treatment process was similar to described by Brito and Bortoletto Júnior (2019). The particles were dried in an oven (≈ 3% moisture) and placed into containers made of wire mesh with dimensions of 13 cm x 18 cm x 58 cm (height x width x length), which were previously lined with aluminum foil (Figure 1).…”

“…Some researchers have already worked with thermally modified particles from alternative materials such as sugarcane bagasse and bamboo, and noticed the color change after heat treatment; for example; Zhang et al 2013, Zhang et al 2017, Lee et al (2018, Brito andBortoletto Júnior (2019), andBrito et al (2020a).…”

“…This statement is consistent with the behaviour of the panels observed in the present research. The dimensional stability of particleboards can be improved by increasing the adhesive content or applying some type of treatment to the particles, such as heat treatment (Brito & Bortoletto Júnior, 2019). The use of paraffin emulsion is also mentioned, which tends to give greater dimensional stability to the panels.…”
