An Outbreak of Intestinal Obstruction by Ascaridia Galli in Broilers in Minas Gerais

Abstract: Industrial broilers raised on helminthic medication-free feed were diagnosed with a severe disease caused by Ascaridia galli, characterized by intestinal hemorrhage and obstruction. A. galli was identified based on the morphological features of the nematode. Broilers were raised for a longer period (63 days) for weight recovery, grouped as stunted (n=500), had low body score and had fetid diarrhea. The duodenumjejunum segment was the most severely affected with obstruction and had localized accumulation of gas… Show more

“…Ascaridia galli is the most economically important nematode of poultry and prevalent in the major parts of the world ( Ara et al, 2021 ; Shohana et al, 2023 ). However, control of the worm mainly depends on anthelmintic therapy ( Daş et al, 2010 ; Torres et al, 2019 ; Shohana et al, 2023 ). Therefore, findings of the present study, particularly information regarding anthelmintic efficacy will help to minimize the economic losses caused by A. galli globally.…”

“…The worm frequently causes hypoglycemia, increased urates, atrophy of the thymus, stunted growth and reduced egg production. In heavy infection, adult parasites can cause intestinal obstructions, which in turn can lead to reduced nutrient absorption and depletion of fat reserves in the liver ( Daş et al, 2010 ; Sharma et al, 2018 ; Torres et al, 2019 ; Feyera et al, 2022 ). Adult worms may also migrate into the oviduct, and become incorporated in eggs ( Höglund et al, 2023 ).…”
