FPSO collision local damage and ultimate longitudinal bending strength analyses

Abstract: In offshore oil &gas production there is a large concentration of platforms in a limited area of the sea, with the consequent increase of vessel traffic in the region. Platform supply vessels (PSVs), shuttle tankers and maintenance and safety units operate very close to these production platforms, creating a propitious scenario for collisions. Thus, the risk of collision between vessels and platforms has significantly increased, causing concern from the point of view of life loss, material damage and marine en… Show more

“…Simulation methods based in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) should be employed to analyze accidents related to flooding, fire and explosions, and oil spills, as demonstrated by Zhang et al [83], Xie et al [84], and Tkalich [85], respectively. On the other hand, structural analyses, using tools such as Finite Element Methods (FEM), could be employed to investigate collision and grounding accidents, as proposed by Martinez et al [86] and Prabowo et al [87], respectively. -Seeking more government support: To promote and strengthen the support of the government in terms of funds for passenger accident prevention [74,88], including outreach and dissemination activities through regional media are needed.…”

“…At the same time, the value is much smaller than that obtained from experimental material tests in the case that, as the author explained, did not take into account the geometric stress concentrations present in the fi nite element mesh of relatively large size. Th e study by [32] used a failure strain value of 0.2 in ship collision simulations. In contrast, another author recommended a rupture strain value of 0.35 while performing a series of experimental validation studies [33].…”
