Background and Aim:The first purpose of treatment of periodontal disease and bone loss is to regenerate the lost structures and preserve the sound residual tissues. Different techniques and materials are utilized for alveolar bone loss treatment. This review summarizes the techniques and materials utilized for treatment of alveolar bone loss due to periodontitis. Materials and Methods: A search was performed in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases from 1990 to 2021. Totally, 133 studies were collected and reviewed, and finally, 31 studies were selected for the analysis. Results: Of 31 papers, 13 were about intra-bony defects, and others were about furcation involvement defects. Each article suggested different techniques and materials. Clinical parameters such as plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and gingival margin position had been measured in studies, and a few techniques showed better results than others. Treatment of furcation defects is difficult in periodontal therapy. We should note that surgical procedures do not have any superiority over non-surgical procedures. Conclusion:In conclusion, to decide about the best technique, site of defect, severity of disease, the available materials, and the clinician's knowledge should be considered.

Root resection (RR) is a therapeutic option for furcation lesions grade II and III, fracture of one of the roots and root caries. The aim of the study was to evaluate in each selected period (5, 8 and 10 years) the percentage of maintenance of molars that underwent RR therapy with furcation lesions grade II and III or with root fractures. Subjects received the therapy with RR in molars with periodontitis, with furcation lesion grades II or III, and with fractures, caries or endodontic reason, in one of the roots. The supportive periodontal therapy was made for at least one annual session during the assessed time. For the clinical therapy to be considered successful, the tooth is remaining in functional loading, without mobility above grade I, pocket depth ≥ 4 mm, absence of bleeding on probing or exudate, fractures and root caries. Were evaluated the files of 37 patients, 15 males and 22 females, with a mean age of 51.4 (SD = ± 12.46), with a total of 44 teeth with RR, 27 upper and 17 lower molars. The survival rates after the RR was 97.73 % for 05 years of evaluation (44 teeth), 95.35 % for the 08 years (43 teeth) and 97.57 % for the 10 years (41 teeth). 35 teeth were restored with total crows isolated or abutment of fixed prosthesis. The survival rates after 10-years was 90.91 %, and there was no statistical difference between the types of restorations performed and the tooth survival rate.

Objetivo: Este estudo tem por objetivo avaliar um biomaterial composto por β-TCP e PLGA em tratamento regenerativo de furca grau II em molares mandibulares. Método: Foram utilizados estudos científicos publicados no período de 2000 a 2020 em inglês e português nas bases de dados PubMed, Scielo e Semantic Scholar. A busca na base de dados resultou em 84 artigos e após a leitura e análise destes, foram selecionados 23 trabalhos que atenderam ao objetivo desta revisão de literatura. Discussão: Materiais não absorvíveis limitam a formação óssea e os mecanismos biológicos que configuram o processo de cicatrização do tecido, inclusive nas situações de enxertia. Assim, os materiais aloplásticos ou reabsorvíveis, são cada vez mais usados como substitutos ósseos, por serem biologicamente compatíveis com os tecidos adjacentes, além de induzirem o crescimento e remodelação óssea, mantendo a homeostasia e as características essenciais dos tecidos ósseos. Dentre os biomateriais citados, β-TCP e PLGA, demonstraram resultados satisfatórios nas regenerações teciduais e ósseas guiadas em casos de furca e procedimentos de enxertia, por apresentarem características ideais, como biocompatibilidade, biorreabsorção e osteocondução. Conclusão: O beta-tricálcio fosfato em união ao PLGA (vitaGraft), constitui um material viável para procedimentos de enxertia e/ou regeneração periodontal de lesões de furca em dentes posteriores mandibulares.
