The objective of this text is to analyze the State Reform and the implementation of the New Public Management (NPM) and its implications in the field of education, especially in the teaching work in the public sector. The restructuring of education from the 1990s onwards, in the context of the NPM, imposes on teaching work principles and values arising from the productive society of capital, with determinations from the private sector. The text stems from extensive research carried out at the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate level. Data were collected in a municipality in the state of Mato Grosso, in the municipal and state network.

PurposeThis study aims to understand the production of consent to precarious working conditions in administration students' internship experiences.Design/methodology/approachA total of 13 students of an undergraduate program in Business Administration in a private university were interviewed. The students' perceptions about the dynamics of the internship and their engagement in this experience were explored through thematic analysis.FindingsInternships became more than spaces to learn about the world of work. They are also the locus of professional socialization toward precarious work. The detachment of internships from their educational scope is mediated by neonormative control mechanisms that subjectively mobilize the interns, producing the institutionalization and appreciation of the precarious experience, resignified as something that leads to autonomy, learning and a job position.Practical implicationsThe article can help students, universities and companies to assess the role of internships in training future professionals.Social implicationsThe research problematizes the internship as a form of professional socialization toward precarious work and its detachment from the original educational purpose. The article critically contributes to the debate about the current professional socialization process of young students.Originality/valueThe article highlights the subjective dimension that supports students' consent to dysfunctional internships, discussing both the experience of work precariousness and exploitation, and the terms of the students' engagement in such dynamics, bridging consent to neonormative controls.

As racionalidades instrumental e substantiva estão presentes nas organizações. A primeira faz do homem instrumento de produção, expondo-o a um conjunto de regras e princípios utilitários, em que todos os meios são subordinados a determinados fins, não questionados eticamente. A segunda, valoriza a dimensão humana pelo seu pensamento crítico, promotor de mudanças vantajosas, mediante ações individuais e coletivas, respeitando a ética, o meio ambiente, o potencial humano e a confiança. As organizações de serviço são dependentes dos profissionais que atendem clientes, desempenhando trabalho emocional incerto, variável e de difícil controle. Esses profissionais são apoiados pelos que atuam na retaguarda, com atividades padronizadas e controladas. Com tais premissas, este estudo, baseado em pesquisas bibliográficas, se propõe a elaborar um instrumento que detecte as percepções e os comportamentos humanos que se ajustam aos elementos da racionalidade instrumental nas organizações de serviço. Os resultados revelaram que não se pode levantar os indicadores instrumentais sem considerar os substantivos, pois ambos estão presentes, com intensidades diferentes, nas organizações, motivo pelo qual o instrumento elaborado, com quarenta e três afirmativas, contém elementos instrumentais: cálculo;fins; maximização dos recursos; êxito, resultados; desempenho;  utilidade; rentabilidade, e estratégia interpessoal; e substantivos:autorrealização; entendimento; julgamento ético;autenticidade; valores emancipatórios, eautonomia.
