Characterization of wheat genotypes for drought tolerance and water use efficiency

Abstract: The selection of wheat genotypes according to their drought tolerance is essential to off-season cultivation. The objective of this work was to characterize wheat genotypes through yield and components, morphological characteristics under water stress, and irrigated water use efficiency in the Cerrado region in Brazil. Genotypes were planted during the winters of 2016 and 2017 since there is no precipitation during this season and water levels can be measured. They were then submitted to four water regimes: WR… Show more

“…Furthermore, soil salinity can trigger harsh injury to the ovary, and thus may lead to a decrease in the yield [ 57 ]. In terms of yield and its components, significant differences were observed between different wheat genotypes growing under different water regimes in the Cerrado region in Brazil [ 58 ]. Moreover, the individual application of glycine betaine as foliar spraying or biochar application as soil amendment was more efficient to enhance rice yield components such as the number of panicles/m 2 , the number of grains/panicles, and 1000 grain weight (g) as a consequence of mitigating the harmful impact of water stress and soil salinity compared to untreated plants (control treatment) that can increase its panicle sterility under such a condition [ 59 ].…”

“…Plant height can also be used as a criterion to determine the susceptibility of quinoa genotypes to drought, as the longer the cycle, the larger the plant. Short-to-medium cycle cultivars are desirable, and would provide the possibility of more crops per year in irrigated systems [ 2 ] and enable off-season and winter planting. A shorter crop cycle also represents a method of escape from water stress under Cerrado conditions, besides contributing to the definition of the sowing season, such that the grain maturation occurs when the humidity is reduced, thus avoiding seed deterioration [ 2 ].…”
