Show more

“…The same might be true for assertiveness. Although we cannot compare boys and girls based on our measures for choosing an assertive response, previous research has found girls to act more assertively (Vagos, Pereira, et al, 2014) and so they would also be expected to favor this type of behavior.…”

“…This type of assertive behavior includes actually expressing negative feelings and then asking for a behavioral change (Rakus, 1991); this second component of the behavior is only explicitly stated in the assertive option that differently defined assertiveness for girls and not for boys (i.e., so it wouldn’t happen again). We may speculate that, because adolescent girls value social proximity while also being more anxious about generally behaving assertively and displaying negative feelings in particular, and actually do it less (Bridges, Sanderman, Breukers, Ranchor, & Arrindell, 1991; Vagos, Pereira, & Arrindell, 2014), they care more about doing it in such a way as to clearly mention the stability of the relationship, whereas for boys, who are more relaxed about their assertiveness, such a reference is seen as unnecessary and even the expression of some femininity. Surprisingly, the measurement invariance of assertiveness instruments has seldom been assessed; therefore, this finding is distinctive and may serve as a trigger for future work aiming to define what differentiates women’s and men’s assertiveness.…”

“…The tasks required for social success involve the use of various social skills, including initiating and maintaining conversations, taking the initiative of visiting friends and planning joint activities, managing conflicts and disagreements, sharing thoughts, offering emotional support, and refusing unreasonable requests. The short version of the Scale for Interpersonal Behavior measures the assertiveness of the affective and behavioral responses in a wide range of social situations, defining assertiveness as a behavior which is often accompanied by low discomfort in interpersonal situations and without anxiety or aggressiveness of unjustified intensity (Vagos & Pereira, 2010, Vagos, Pereira, & Arrindell, 2014. It consists of four subscales referring to different subcategories of assertiveness: expression of negative feelings; expression of positive feelings; expression and management of personal limitations; and taking initiative.…”

“…The authors considered the absolute and incremental fit indices of the recommendations for scale analysis (Diamantopoulos & Siguaw, 2000;Vieira, 2009 as cited in Vagos & Pereira, 2010). As for reliability and construct validity, Cronbach alpha values ranging from α= 0.68 to α= 0.94 were obtained in different variables (Vagos, Pereira, & Arrindell, 2014).…”

“…1) A assertividade negativa, que ocorre quando se pede ao outro para mudar o seu comportamento irritante, de maneira a discordar com a finalidade de defender os seus próprios interesses (Arrindell et al, 1988;2002;Vagos et al, 2014);…”
