Abstract: ABSTRACT. Colonization of leaf litter by benthic macroinvertebrates in an Atlantic forest stream from northeast Brazil. The aim of this study was to analyze the colonization of Inga ingoides (Leguminosae) leaves by benthic macroinvertebrates in field experiments. A total of 270 leaf packs, distributed in three stretches, were submerged of similar morphology and physical and chemical parameters of water between February to July 2013, and retrieved after 7, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days. Two treatments were used: colo… Show more

“…For Nin et al (2009), colonization by amphipods starts in the first hours of exposure, and it is later replaced by other groups, especially insects. Santos & Rodrigues (2015) observed that over time there is an increase of colonization and succession of smaller organisms, such as mites. Considering that the colonization by shredders in the natural wetland occurred before the first collection, these herbivores (shredders) were replaced by detritivores (collectors), and these, by carnivores (predators).…”

“…Benthic macroinvertebrates sorted from the material retained in the sieves were identified under a stereomicroscope using a suitable identification key (Mugnai et al, 2010), and after this procedure, they were recorded, and stored in 70% alcohol. Functional trophic groups (FTG) of the sampled benthic macroinvertebrates were categorized according to the classification proposed by Cummins et al (2005) and to supplementary bibliography (Mormul et al, 2006;Oliveira & Callisto, 2010;Barbola et al, 2011;Santos, 2014;Telöken et al, 2014;Santos & Rodrigues, 2015).…”

“…The abundance of Stenochironomus in Neotropical streams is quite variable as some authors report their rarity (Gonçalves Jr et al 2007), while others have documented great abundances of this genus (Saito andFonseca-Gessner 2014, Mazão andBispo 2016). Stenochironomus larvae are important indicators for the preservation status of riparian forests, as they are known as shredders (Silva et al 2009, Santos andRodrigues 2015). Despite the low quantity of shredders in Neotropical communities (Boyero et al 2011), they are good indicators of environmental impacts since their abundance decreases when riparian forests are deforestated (Sonoda et al 2009a).…”
