Gender-specific association of the rs6499640 polymorphism in the FTO gene with plasma lipid levels in Chinese children

Abstract: The fat mass- and obesity-associated gene (FTO) is significantly associated with obesity, but the associations of FTO with obesity-related traits are not fully described. We aimed to investigate the association of the FTO single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs6499640 with lipid levels in Chinese children. A total of 3503 children aged 6-18 years were included in the present study. Lipid levels were analyzed and the SNP rs6499640 was genotyped using the TaqMan Allelic Discrimination Assay. Statistically signif… Show more

“…In a cohort of Romanian children and adolescents aged 2–17 years, Duicu et al found that the G allele carriers of the rs17817449 polymorphism had a higher average level of TG than the subjects with the TT genotype (1.12 vs. 0.39 mmol/L, p = 0.003) [ 129 ]. Gao et al investigated the association of the rs6499640 polymorphism with lipid levels in a group of Chinese children and adolescents and observed that the subjects with the GG or GA genotype had a higher average level of TG than those with the AA genotype among girls (0.94 vs. 0.75 mmol/L, p = 0.001), but not in boys [ 130 ].…”

“…The adipose tissue cells are capable of synthesising and secreting biologically active substances, called adipokines [1]. They fulfil various biological functions, including the regulation of appetite and satiety, maintaining energy homeostasis, fat and carbohydrate metabolism, insulin sensitivity, regulation of vascular haemostasis, blood pressure, and inflammatory and immunological processes [2]. Omentin is a relatively recently described adipokine that appears to be associated with metabolic risk factors, but its role in the organism is not yet fully understood.…”
