Abstract: Monteverdia ilicifolia (Mart. ex Reissek) Biral (basionym: Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. ex Reissek) (Celastraceae) is popularly known as holy thorn or "espinheira-santa" in Brazil. This herb is traditionally used for gastric and digestive problems. However, similar species are often used as adulterants.
