A Rapid and Reliable Method for Molecular Detection of Fusarium guttiforme, the Etiological Agent of Pineapple Fusariosis

Abstract: test was conducted with slips of the pineapple cultivar Pérola, a multiplex PCR was run, and the results compared with those obtained with real-time PCR. The real-time PCR assay with its specific primer set could readity distinguish F. guttiforme from other Fusarium species known to occur on pineapple. The real-time PCR test had 95% sensitivity and 100% specificity with a significance level p<0.0001. For field samples the test had 100% sensitivity and specificity. Thus, this new test is fit for use in serial a… Show more

“…Using specific primers, the phytopathogenic fungus Fusarium sp. was identified by a PCR diagnostic protocol in the work of Carnielli-Queiroz, Fernandes, Fernandes, and Ventura (2019). Also according to the authors, the equipment and reagents used for this purpose were able to track samples of pineapple naturally infected with this species.…”

“…For plant phytopathogens, morphological characterization is still the most used method of fungal identification to this day (Carnielli-Queiroz et al, 2019). However, PCR is already being used to identify the species of fungi in food samples, causing a difference in the final quantity of the product (Fungaro & Sartori, 2009).…”

“…Fusariosis of pineapple is always associated with several species of Fusarium fungi. In Brazil, Fusarium guttiforme has been reported to cause the disease with an estimated loss of about 30-40% (Carnielli-Queiroz et al, 2019). Meanwhile, Jacobs et al (2010) demonstrated F. ananatum as the emerging species involved in pineapple fruit lesions in South Africa.…”
