This study aimed to evaluate the viability of supplementing two diets for the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei with Lactobacillus plantarum. One using fish meal as a protein source and another using soy protein concentrate, as well as the effect of these formulations on shrimp intestinal microbiota. To assay probiotic viability in the formulated diets, the number of CFU g-1 was observed weekly over the course of four weeks. The viability of Lactobacillus plantarum in relation to the physical parameters of the diets, including stability, buoyancy, and expansion, was quantified. The effect of the diets on microbiota and intestinal tract morphology was determined by performing a 2x2 factorial experiment (two diets, with or without supplementation) in triplicate, totaling 12 experimental units, with five animals per unit, fed with 3.5% of biomass for 17 days. The concentration of lactic acid bacteria decreased over time, irrespective of protein source. The diet with fishmeal as a protein source, independent of probiotic supplementation, presented good stability and did not disintegrate after four hours. In contrast, the diet with soy protein concentrate, supplemented or not, disintegrated between 2.5 and 3 hours, presenting low stability. All diets presented 0% buoyancy. The expansion rate was higher in diets with soy protein concentrate, but without the influence probiotic supplementation or interaction between the factors. In the in vivo assay, both supplemented diets showed greater total heterotrophic bacteria count than without probiotic; however, no difference in count was noted in diets with different protein source. Lactic acid bacteria were only observed in the shrimp fed diets supplemented with probiotic. Histology of the intestinal tract showed that all intestines had intact, well-developed and well-organized cells, irrespective of diet. Thus, L. plantarum, when combined with different protein sources, produced similar effects on the structure and microbiota of the marine shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei.

The current study was conducted to evaluate the feeding regimen of Aspergillus oryzae (ASP) on the growth, intestinal histomorphology and blood profile of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Four different ASP‐feeding regimens were evaluated, including feeding the basal diet continuously (control), feeding ASP (1 g/kg) continuously (ASPC), feeding ASP for 1 day and the next day without (ASPF1) or feeding ASP for 1 day and the two next days without (ASPF2). After 60 days, the final weight, weight gain, SGR, feed intake, protein efficiency, protein gain, body protein content, haematocrit, haemoglobin, and RBC and WBC values were increased significantly (p < 0.05) with lower glutamic‐pyruvate transaminase in ASPC group compared to the control without no difference (p > 0.05) with ASPF1‐feeding regimen. Interestingly, glutamyl oxaloacetic transaminase was significantly reduced in all feeding regimens compared to the control (p < 0.05). Protease, lipase and villi length were significantly (p < 0.05) improved in all feeding regimens compared to the control, while amylase activity increased only in ASPC group. Thus, the obtained results indicated that all ASP‐feeding regimens resulted in quite similar outcomes with respect to growth, digestive enzyme activity and intestinal histomorphology.

This study aimed to evaluate the resistance to stress (transport, thermal, and osmotic) and growth performance of Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus post‐larvae fed a diet supplemented with Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Two groups were established in triplicate: fish fed a diet supplemented with probiotic and control group without probiotic. Two hundred larvae per experimental unit were randomly distributed. Fish were fed 6 times daily. After 20 days, growth performance was determined, including survival, final weight, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, and effectiveness of sexual reversal. From these fish, 30 fingerlings (average weight 0,25 ± 0.02 g) per experimental unit were removed to perform stress tests (n=180), with 10 fingerlings being subjected to different stressors (i.e., transport, osmotic shock, and thermal shock). Fish fed with probiotic showed improved performance in final weight (16.6%) and survival (15.1%), as well as higher resistance to thermal (102.3%) and osmotic challenge (27.5%) compared to control fish. In addition to improved growth and survival performance, probiotic supplementation had no effect on the rate of masculinization.
