Supplementation of lamb ewes with different protein sources in deferred marandu palisadegrass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. marandu) pasture

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different protein sources on the performance of lamb ewes and their offspring supplemented in deferred pasture. The treatments were the different protein sources: soybean meal, cotton cake, babassu cake and coconut cake. The ewes were weighed and evaluated for their body condition score during the gestation, parturition and weaning phases. The lambs were weighed at birth and at weaning. The structural variables and chemical composition of the pasture we… Show more

“…Sheep farming for meat production in Brazil has expanded in the last decade because of the increased demand for this type of meat in the market. Thus, producers have sought ways to establish production systems capable of efficiently generating quality meat at a low cost (1,2,3) . However, the productivity of these animals in Brazil is still incipient due to deficiencies in genetic and nutritional management, poor financing, inadequate management systems of the various rearing stages, and low ability to properly organize the production chain (4) .…”

“…Inadequate nutrition of the ewe, especially in the last third of gestation, is associated with a reduction in lamb birth weight and development, low vigor, and high neonatal mortality (Fraga et al, 2018;Gurgel et al, 2020;Arco et al, 2021). Moreover, ewes need a greater nutrient supply in a smaller volume of feed due to the reduction in abdominal space while pregnant.…”

“…Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu), it is observed that it exhibits good primary production indexes, vitality, seed production capacity, ability to make small and large ruminants present the maximum production potential, due to the supply of forage in adequate proportion and good nutritional value (GERMANO et al, 2018;EUCLIDES et al, 2019;GURGEL et al, 2020;HEIMBACH et al, 2020).…”
