Show more

“…Currently, pharmacological semen collection by urethral catheterization is the gold-standard method for obtaining semen in wild felines ( Araujo et al, 2018 , 2020b ; Jeong et al, 2018 ; Jorge et al, 2019 ; Kheirkhah et al, 2017 ; Lueders et al, 2012 ), other wild species ( Araujo et al, 2023 ; Curry and Roth, 2016 ; Jeong et al, 2019 ; Silinski et al, 2002 ; Silva et al, 2022 ) and in domestic species ( Cavalero et al, 2019 ; Madrigal-Valverde et al, 2021 ; Silva et al, 2021 ), and it allowed efficient semen recovery from the five male jaguars in this study. The first step in the development of assisted reproduction technology for a species is the effective collection of sperm, which aims to permit, in the future, the growth of genetic variety across in situ and ex situ populations, embracing the concept of One Conservation ( Pizzutto et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Although electroejaculation is a well‐established semen collection technique in mammals (Silva et al, 2004), the pharmacological semen collection technique has demonstrated higher efficiency in obtaining higher quality semen in several wild species, like wild and domestic felids (Araujo et al 2018, 2020; Araujo, Deco‐Souza, et al, 2020; Jeong et al, 2018; Jorge Neto et al, 2019; Jorge‐Neto et al, 2020; Kheirkhah et al, 2017; Lueders et al, 2012; Silva, Ullony, et al, 2019; Zambelli, Prati, Cunto, Iacono, & Merlo, 2008), bear (Curry & Roth, 2016; Jeong et al, 2019) and even giant anteater (Silva, Araujo, et al, 2019). This study was performed before the description of the pharmacological collection technique in wild animals, being the electroejaculator at the time the best option for semen recovery.…”

“…Collecting semen through catheterization, as described in detail at the works by Araujo et al (2020) and Rosenfield et al (2020), has become a method of interest, and demanded further training.…”

“…The incisors and molars grow continuously, which makes their use as an estimator of age much less feasible (Ojasti, 1973). Besides obtaining radiographic images, additional objectives were to practice orotracheal intubation, which is rather challenging, compared to other species (Girotto, 2018), and urethral catheterization, for future pharmaceutical induced semen collection techniques (Araujo et al, 2020;Rosenfield et al, 2019a). Although several publications have partially described the anatomic and radiographic structures of H. hydrochaeris (Araújo et al, 2012;Bode et al, 2016aBode et al, , 2016bBrombini et al, 2018;Hirota et al, 2018;Kihara, 2017;Schimming et al, 2015;Silva, 2019), this is the first reference on the complete radiographic skeletal anatomy, supported by bone specimens, intended as a reference for scientific studies and clinical-surgical applications.…”
