Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos: the highest Amphibian diversity within an Atlantic Forest protected area

Abstract: We studied the amphibian community of the Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos (PARNASO) for over thirty years. The area of 20,024 hectares has a steep altitudinal gradient (200-2,263 m a.s.l.), and it is located in the municipalities of Guapimirim, Magé, Petrópolis and Teresópolis, middle of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Most data were obtained from sampling sites in the municipality of Teresópolis, with additional data from zoological collections and bibliography. We recorded 83 amphibian species distr… Show more

“…These and the absence of diagnostic phenotypic characters distinguishing these clades suggest that they belong to a single species. We could not include samples of the specimens that were cited as O. hiemalis from Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro by Caram et al (2011) and Carvalho-e-Silva et al (2020).…”

“…PNSO harbors the Serra dos Órgãos mountain in the central portion of the Serra do Mar formation in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. PNSO encompasses 20,024 ha and several municipalities, and it is currently the conservation unit protecting the highest species diversity of amphibians in the Atlantic Forest biome (Carvalho-e-Silva et al, 2020; Fig. 1).…”

“…Recent surveys have provided lists of amphibian species, mostly preliminary, for some high montane Atlantic Forest areas (i.e., above 1,000 m) in southeast Brazil (Cruz et al 2009, Siqueira et al 2011a,b, Garey et al 2014, Folly et al 2016, Lima et al 2021). These habitats are known for their high rates of endemism of anurans, particularly in portions of the Serra do Mar (Siqueira et al 2011b, Carvalho-e-Silva et al 2020 and Serra da Mantiqueira regions (Neves et al 2018.…”

“…The state of Rio de Janeiro, whose territory is entirely included within the Atlantic Forest domain, was recently reported to harbor 201 amphibian species (Dorigo et al 2018), and new species with occurrence in the state are still being steadily described (e.g., Folly et al 2018, Pereira Silva et al 2018, Taucce et al 2018, Cruz et al 2019, Nunes et al 2021. In recent years, lists of species of amphibians have been compiled or updated for several forested areas in the state of Rio de Janeiro (e.g., Almeida-Gomes et al 2014, Caram et al 2016, Carvalho-e-Silva et al 2020, Dorigo et al 2021, contributing considerably to the knowledge of its amphibian fauna. However, gaps of knowledge for areas at high altitudes still remain, not only for the state of Rio de Janeiro, but for the Atlantic Forest biome as a whole (Lima et al 2021).…”
