Potential seed dispersers: a new facet of the ecological role of Boa constrictor constrictor Linnaeus 1758

Abstract: The boa (Boa constrictor) is considered a top predator and its diet includes a wide variety of birds, mammals, and other reptiles, all related directly to their availability in the environment inhabited by the snake. Seven boas were found roadkilled on highways adjacent to conservation units in the semi-arid region of Rio Grande do Norte state, in northeastern Brazil. Their digestive tract was analyzed to identify food items and classify them according to their orientation in the tract. Among the food items fo… Show more

“…In this context, S. merianae , B. constrictor , and P. patagoniensis stand out among the most frequently reported and road‐killed species in our dataset. These species are both habitat and dietary generalists, with the red‐tailed boa and the black‐and‐white tegu being large species that play many ecological roles (Cabral et al, 2019; Diniz et al, 2021; Marques et al, 2019; Quintino & Bicca‐Marques, 2013). The Patagonia green racer also has one record of road‐kill scavenging (Ucha & Santos, 2017), which could increase the species' risk of road mortality if it is a frequent behaviour.…”
