Knowledge of biodiversity in oligotrophic aquatic ecosystems is fundamental to plan conservation strategies for protected areas. This study assessed the diatom diversity from an urban reservoir with oligotrophic conditions. The Piraquara I reservoir is located in an Environmental Protection Area and is responsible for the public supply of Curitiba city and the metropolitan region. Samples were collected seasonally between October 2007 and August 2008. Periphytic samples were obtained by removing the biofilm attached to Polygonum hydropiperoides stems and to glass slides. The taxonomic study resulted in the identification of 87 diatom taxa. The most representative genera regarding the species richness were Pinnularia (15 species) and Eunotia (14 species). Five species were registered for the first time in Brazil and seven in the State of Paraná. Taxonomic and ecological comments of the species registered are provided.

Considering changes in biodiversity over large time scales, the use of sediments to access knowledge about current and past diversity has recently been highlighted as an emerging field for biodiversity science. Therefore, this work aimed to use lake sediments to perform a taxonomic survey of abundant diatoms from two lakes sediments from the Upper Paraná River floodplain and contributes to new species registrations. For diatom flora analysis were selected sediment samples from lakes. The diatoms with relative abundance ≥ 2% in at least one sediment sample were analyzed and identified under light microscopy. The study resulted in the identification of 47 taxa, including 40 at the specific level and seven possible new taxa. Among the taxa identified, 12 taxa (27%) of these had never before been documented in the Upper Paraná River floodplain.

RESUMO -Este estudo objetivou conhecer a composição taxonômica das diatomáceas epilíticas das famílias Anomoeoneidaceae, Cymbellaceae, Gomphonemaceae, Achnanthidiaceae, Brachysiraceae e Naviculaceae e verificar a distribuição espacial dos táxons em 19 rios da Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Itajaí. As amostragens abrangeram cinco sub-bacias, no período de abril a maio de 2009. Foram identificados 59 táxons específicos e infraespecíficos, distribuídos em 18 gêneros. As famílias mais representativas foram Naviculaceae e Gomphonemataceae com 15 táxons cada. Os gêneros mais ricos em espécies foram Gomphonema Ehrenberg (15 táxons) e Navicula Bory (13 táxons). São apresentados dados morfométricos e imagens em microscopia de luz e/ou eletrônica de varredura dos táxons. Um total de 28 táxons são citações pioneiras para o estado de Santa Catarina, vindo contribuir ao conhecimento florístico das diatomáceas em ambientes lóticos no sul do Brasil.

Abstract: We suggest future studies in this environment, once it has propitious characteristics to the development of epilithic diatoms. Moreover, phylogenetic studies are also recommended for a better distinction of taxa with a wide morphologic variation.
