Anurans from the Middle Jaguaribe River Region, Ceará State, Northeastern Brazil

Abstract: The Middle Jaguaribe River region is a poorly sampled area in the Caatingas domain, located in the eastern Ceará State, northeastern Brazil. The Brazilian government agencies considered this region as a priority area for conservation and inventories. In order to fill this biodiversity knowledge gap, we conducted a ten-day rapid inventory of the anuran fauna from April 11 to 20, 2014, surveying different physiognomies of the region. We recorded 19 anuran species belonging to five families: Bufonidae (2), Hylida… Show more

“…The known distribution of Pseudopaludicola pocoto was based on few records for the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, and Pernambuco Santana et al 2015). Recently Andrade et al (2015) included a new record in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest of Minas Gerais state, the southernmost record of this species.…”

“…Despite being neglected with a small parcel protected by conservation units, the Caatinga has a diverse biological heritage, in which recent studies (Arias et al, 2001(Arias et al, , 2011Passos et al, 2011;Magalhães et al, 2014;Santana et al, 2015) have described new species in the semi-arid regions, demonstrating that, contrary to that many stated previously, this domain is not poor in species or endemism, although still poorly sampled (Pessoa et al, 2012).…”

“…The Neotropical region comprises the largest diversity of anuran amphibians, with approximately one-third of the species known in the world (Duellman, 1999). However, mostly of the Caatinga amphibian inventories published to date have been conducted within protected areas and/or in humid areas of high altitude, being in fact areas that are better characterized as Rain Forest and/or Cerrado enclaves (Santana et al, 2015).…”

“…Pseudopaludicola pocoto Magalhães, Loebmann, Kokubum, Haddad & Garda, 2014 was described from municipality of Santa Quitéria, state of Ceará, Brazil, and was also recorded in other states in northeastern Brazil: Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, and Pernambuco; such areas are mostly associated with the Caatinga Biome Santana et al 2015;Lantyer-Silva et al 2016). Andrade et al (2015) and Silva et al (2015) extended this species' distribution to the states of Minas Gerais and Piauí, respectively.…”
