Economic valuation of selected ecosystem services in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), Pakistan

Abstract: Payment for ecosystem services (PES) is a mechanism where a consumer is able and ready to pay for the protection of the precise ecosystem service and there must be a provider such as local societies receiving an economic resource, who in return, must have the ability to maintain that ecosystem service. “…Carbon stock is stored in carbon pools named as aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, deadwood, organic litter, and soil organic carbon, with aboveground biomass having the greatest proportion of carbon stock, i.e., 15-30% [10]. Over 650 billion tons of carbon is stored in the world's forests, including 45 percent in the soil, 44 percent in biomass, and 11 percent in litter and dead wood [11]. Consequently, forests are essential for sustaining the global climate system, managing global carbon balance, and limiting the growth of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations [12].…”

“…The main benefits of ecosystem services internalised by PES include regulating services, such as biodiversity protection [26], hydrogeological protection [27], and carbon storage [28]. In recent times, cultural services, such as tourism-recreational activities and health are also gaining recognition [29,30].…”
