Antimitotic and antimutagenic action of the Hymenaea stigonocarpa bark on dividing cells

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the action of Hymenaea stigonocarpa bark hydroalcoholic extract against a mutagenic compound using A. cepa meristematic root cells as a test system. The treatment groups were: Negative Control (NC) -distilled water; Positive Control (PC) -paracetamol at a concentration of 0.008 mg/mL, Jatoba Control (JC) -aqueous fraction jatobá-do-cerrado at 0.5 or 1.0 or 1.5 mg/mL, and Simultaneous Treatment (ST) -jatobá-do-cerrado aqueous fraction at a concentration of 0.5 or 1.0 … Show more

“…This is due to the cat that the interpretation of this concept represents for a share of the population, the absence of chemicals, which would be those that can cause some damage or otherwise represent danger to people's health (Vieira et al, 2010;Santana et al, 2016).…”

“…The root meristem of Allium cepa L. (onion) is considered in the scientific milieu as an efficient bioassay for the evaluation of the acute toxicity at the cellular level of chemical compounds due to the reduced chromosome number (2n = 16), which favors detection of chromosomal or clastogenic alterations, mitotic spindle disturbances or aneugenic alterations, and disorders in the cell proliferation index. This test system is internationally accepted by research agencies as an assessment tool with accurate sensitivity for analysis of cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and mutagenicity of the substance of interest, since the results achieved demonstrate, in most cases, satisfactory similarity to those obtained though animal testing systems and in cell cultures Herrero et al [10], Neves et al [11], Lacerda et al [12], Tabrez et al [13]; Gomes et al [14], Oliveira et al [15]; CAMPOS & MarinMorales [16]; Moura et al [17], Santana et al [18].Therefore, the goal of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of diet shakes in root meristem cells of A. cepa, from three different highly commercialized brands in drugstores all over Brazil.…”

“…According to Santana et al (14), inhibition of cell division is related to cell death caused by disturbances, such as toxic action of chemical substances or compounds to cell division kinetics or essential chromosomes or cells. These events, according to Gomes et al (25) and Marques et al (3), cause signifi cant reduction in cell replacement and alter protein synthesis of the tissue or organ where they occur.…”

“…Root meristem cells of Allium cepa L. (onion) are an effi cient test system for initial screening of acute cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of chemicals (14,15). This bioassay provides excellent proliferation kinetic properties and a few chromosomes (2n=16), which facilitates the detection of mitotic spindle changes and chromosomal breaks (16,17).…”
