The orchid-bee faunas (Hymenoptera: Apidae) of ‘Reserva Ecológica Michelin’, ‘RPPN Serra Bonita’ and one Atlantic Forest remnant in the state of Bahia, Brazil, with new geographic records

A Nemésio

Abstract: The orchid bee faunas of two private natural preserves, 'Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural da Serra Bonita' (RSB) and 'Reserva Ecológica Michelin' (REM), and a forest fragment inside the campus of the 'Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz', were surveyed for the first time. All three areas constitute Atlantic Forest remnants in the southern portion of the state of Bahia, Brazil. A total of 1,782 males belonging to 32 species were actively collected with insect nets during 90 hours of field work from Nove… Show more

“…The region is known as an important endemism area for several taxonomic groups, and has been considered one of the most important in the Atlantic Forest (Franke et al, 2005;Nemésio, 2013a). The orchid bee fauna of the Central Atlantic Forest Corridor was studied in the southern portion of Bahia (Nemésio, 2013a;Nemésio, 2013b;Nemésio, 2013c;Nemésio, 2014) and in a region near to our study area (Rosa et al, 2015). However, large variations have been observed in orchid bee communities, even in neighboring regions, which could be related to habitat heterogeneity (Tonhasca et al, 2002b).…”

“…According to our models, the region where the environmental suitability for E. marianae has been highly stable through the last 21 000 years and will remain so in future scenarios is located in southern Bahia and northern Espírito Santo. There are large remnants (>10 000 ha) of Atlantic Forest in this area, all well sampled and with relatively abundant populations of E. marianae (Bonilla‐Gómez, ; Nemésio, , ,b,c,d, ). Deforestation is the main current problem in the region.…”

“…Many species of orchid bees occur and nest in urban landscapes (Storti et al 2013). Relatively small forest fragments, such as public parks, in urban areas can act as dispersion corridors and increase habitat connectivity for bee assemblages (Nemésio and Silveira 2007;Storck-Tonon et al 2013;Storti et al 2013;Nemésio 2014).…”
