Hematological and morphometric differences of blood cells from rheas, Rhea americana (Struthioniformes: Rheidae) on two conservation farms

Abstract: Today, blood tests are an indispensable tool in avian medicine. This study aimed to describe and compare hematological and morphometric data of erythrocytes, leukocytes and thrombocytes of rhea, Rhea americana. To do so, 58 rheas of both sexes on two farms, one in Cachoeiro do Itapemirim, Espírito Santo (ES), and the other in São Carlos, São Paulo (SP), were selected. Blood samples were taken and their RBC counts, PCV and Hb levels were determined and used in hematimetric index calculations. The total and diff… Show more

“…The changes observed in fish Hct can be attributed to the swimming frequency resulting from the increased concentration level of the toxicant, significant decline in the RBC, Hct, and hemoglobin due to the increasing doses of xylene (Chris et al 2022 ). This agrees with Valores, (2005) who reported a low level of Hct and hemoglobin in an aquatic organism with sedentary behavior in some lentic water bodies and a higher value in active aquatic lives with spleen contraction which also resulted in a distorted shape and size of RBC as well (Dal'Bó et al 2015 ; Gallo et al 2017 ; Wilhelm et al 1992 ).…”

“…El recuento total en la fórmula leucocitaria del ñandú petiso, tanto en juveniles y adultos, fue similar. No obstante, el recuento de leucocitos en ambas edades fue menor en comparación con los valores encontrados en el ñandú grande en cautiverio (Uhart et al, 2006;Fortes et al, 2013;Gallo et al, 2017).…”

“…Detection of changes in RBC morphology is clinically important in haematology and medicine [20], especially as an aid in establishing a diagnosis regarding the cause of anaemia. Anaemia [19]; group description: groups were formed by categorizing continuous variables of analysed values of haematological parameters (HGB, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, and RDW) by categorising them into two groups-those with lower values or values below the physiological range (Groups 1), and those with higher values or values above the physiological range (Groups 2), bearing in mind that the groups have approximately the same number of samples each.…”

“…Detection of changes in RBC morphology is clinically important in haematology and medicine [20], especially as an aid in establishing a diagnosis regarding the cause of anaemia. Anaemia represents one of the more common small ruminant emergencies, which can be difficult to diagnose before it is too severe [21].…”
