Marine protected area and the spatial distribution of the gill net fishery in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil

Abstract: This study characterizes the gill net fishery at Colônia de Pescadores Z13 (CPZ13), in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, and its relationship with the marine protected area 'Monumento Natural do Arquipélago das Ilhas Cagarras -MoNa Cagarras', describing the fleet and fishing gears, identifying fishing spots, species and their associations by gillnet type. From June 2012 to May 2013, every Tuesday to Sunday, gill net landings were monitored and fishers interviewed regarding their catch. Small boats (dory whaleboats) … Show more

“…In this study some records of rough-toothed dolphins were made in five gillnet fishing spots (or ‘pesqueiros’) of the artisanal fishing community of Copacabana, Colônia de Pesca de Copacabana , Z-13 (Amorim & Monteiro-Neto, 2016). Known prey of rough-toothed dolphins such as white mullet, largehead hairtail and Brazilian menhaden are fished in gillnets at these fishing spots (Amorim & Monteiro-Neto, 2016), although the potential threats of by-catch and associated dolphin mortality have yet to be reported. No sightings of S. bredanensis occurred in the MoNaCa Cagarras and adjacent areas but rather in Resex Itaipu where fishing activity occurs which again points to the need for further monitoring potential interactions with fisheries.…”

“…Thus, the data suggest that the doses of H. speciosa extracts used in this study are safe. The lack of cytotoxicity effect of Hancornia speciosa fruits was corroborated with the cytotoxicity effects of H. speciosa latex on the root meristem cells of Allium cepa [ 43 ].…”

“…Sciaenidae and Batrachoididae) discarded from shrimp trawling were frequent in the diet of boobies from southern coastal colonies (Vianna and Almeida 2005;Branco and Verani 2006;Cattani et al 2011;Silva et al 2016) and absent in oceanic colonies, suggesting an influence of such fishery in the dietary composition of brown boobies. However, prey usually associated with discards were scarce in Cagarras, despite the occurrence of bottom trawling around the archipelago (Moraes et al 2013;Amorim and Monteiro-Neto 2016). It is possible that the dataset from Cagarras is biased by insufficient sampling (i.e.…”
