Massive transfusion triggers in severe trauma: Scoping review

Abstract: Objective to identify the predictive variables or the massive transfusion triggers in severely traumatized patients through the existing scales.Method a review of the literature was carried out using the Scoping Review method across the electronic databases CINAHL, MEDLINE, LILACS, the Cochrane and IBECS libraries, and the Google Scholar search tool. Results in total, 578 articles were identified in the search and the 36 articles published in the last ten years were included, of which 29 were original articles … Show more

“…In particular, prediction of the need for massive transfusion, i.e., ≥10 units of packed red blood cells (RBCs) within 24 h 7 , has been extensively studied 4,5 . Precise predictive algorithms for the need for massive transfusion using physiological variables without blood tests have been well established 4,5,8 . In contrast, less attention has been devoted to development of precise predictive algorithms for the need for immediate hemostatic interventions and transfusion.…”

“…The use of specific equipment for this procedure was also a care measure reported by nursing technicians in the present study. On the subject, other authors point out that the equipment with a 170μ filter aims to prevent clots and aggregates from reaching the bloodstream [1,15]. This care procedure associated with the inspection of the bag for the presence of air bubbles and consistency [8] can be understood as the interventions: To Check Device Security and To Implement Security Regime [12].…”

“…Other authors emphasize that fluid or medication must not be added to the product to be transfused, corroborating the reports of the nursing technicians who took part in this research. Except for red blood cells, which can be infused in shared venous access with 0.9% sodium chloride solution [1,15].…”
